Hi all

CCA's first Classic of 2020... The 3 Cafes ride.

All welcome - CCA members or not. If you fancy it, please ensure you are self-sufficient in terms of food, drink, cash and navigation: in case you need to find an alternative way back.

Friday 20th March, 8.30am, Rhubarb & Mustard, Ashwell.

The route is as per last year;

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31756457

The Full English route is 118 miles mostly in Suffolk. The pace is the same as the Wells 123 Classic, all-inclusive club run styley. 15-17mph average. It'll be a full day and note sunset is around 6pm on that day. So bring lights. This distance, early on the year, with the chance of bad weather, are just the sort of conditions the pro riders take on every Spring. Partly with that in mind - and to be inclusive to all members, there's an alternative version;

The Continental route ticks off two of the cafes and is approx 60 miles total to Bury St Edmunds station, for a relaxing train ride back to Ashwell via Cambridge station.

The roads and lanes are a bit tighter in Suffolk at times. It requires a little more single file here and there. Treat it as an opportunity to prove your group riding skills. And there is a small section [2.5 miles] of A-road around Highpoint Prison. Later, Saffron can be a bit heavy in traffic by the time we get there. As ever, we will do whatever we need to do to stay safe.

Cafe 1
The Blue Egg
35 miles
A bike ride magnet. Top quality food. Super slick, quick service.

Cafe 2
Maglia Rosso
62 miles
This marks out the furthest point of the ride and is a bit of a mecca for cycling cafe hunters, complete with converted pub garden into a cyclo-cross track. http://www.magliarosso.co.uk/the-cafe/

Cafe 3
Bicicletta
93 miles
Saffron Walden's trendy cycling cafe. Note: they only do cards here, no cash any more.

I will pre-order lunch at Maglia Rosso. I will ask for your choices closer to the day.

See you in Spring!

PS The Wells 123 classic this year is Friday 4 September 2020.

  • Martin - I'm working on assembling another SNCC flatlanders guest squad; should hopefully be three of us (but I'd go for a 2-4 spread on the betting markets if I were you)

    cheers

Hi Simon - it would be great to have some SNCC attendees. I'm inviting friends from Verulam CC too, who may do some or all of the ride. Hitchin Nomads may be represented too. It would be nice to have a multi-club ride and meet new people.

  • Bringing this to the top again. Start your season with this ride to blow away the cobwebs.

Fingers crossed we get some kinder weather in Spring...

Anyone up for a 3 cafes training ride? With the recent crap weather, it feels like I haven't done any decent miles for a while.

I'm heading out and passing the 3 tuns at 8.30am. If no one is about at that time, I'll head round the TT course and get back to the tuns for 9.30am.

If no one fancies joining me on a tempo ride then I'll tag on with the Sat 9.30 guys.
  • Taff, I'm looking for an early ride on Sat but not sure if I'm good for much more than 50 miles at the moment
  • Dan, meet us at the tuns at 8.30. So far it's Me, Tomi and Vince. Vince is suggesting over to Saffron Walden.
  • See you there
  • Riders... It's a good idea to pre-order lunch from Maglia Rosso to get on top of things. So please review the menu here and write your name and order on this list here:

Rhubarb & Mustard in Ashwell look forward to inviting us in early for coffee and use of their facilities on Friday from 8am (we leave 8.30am). Please do your bit to support local Ashwell businesses and buy a coffee. Why not go mad and buy a greetings card and fine chocolate truffles too?

The current weather forecast is a bit fresh but generally really nice - let's hope it stays that way.

A few Verulam CC riders may join the crew on the day. It's looking like a great group.

A reminder to jot down your Maglia lunch order here:

  • Hi all

The 3 Cafes ride is this Friday. As it stands, it is still going ahead - unless government advice changes on gatherings.

Everyone should exercise common sense and not engage in club activities if they are feeling unwell or are isolating themselves because of exposure or potential exposure to the virus.

I will submit the menu order to Maglia Rosso on Wednesday and double-check all fine with them for opening on Friday.

Place your Maglia lunch menu choice here (menu is above):

  • I like this note from Flamme Rouge about their shop and rides - and it's in the same spirit that I hope we have a fun Friday out on our 3 Cafes ride... Cheers!

  • Hi Riders...

    3 Cafes ride... Cancelled.

With the latest government advice, we can't really support this ride any more - so like all the other Classics in Belgium, we have no choice but to cancel.

    Thanks
    Martin
  • Martin - sensible decision, I'll let our lot know

    cheers
  • Martin - Thanks for letting us know.
  • 🙈. It's a nightmare at the moment. Don't see anything before June Sorry Martin. Must be disappointing
