Youth/Junior Nationals update

edited August 2012 in General
Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere....

Andrew Leverton and Ed Goater were in Manchester for the last week for the Nationals, both riding as juniors.

It was the first time for both of them and a fantastic experience.

Andrew was riding for VC St. Raphael, they focus on sprint riders.
Ed was the sole CC Ashwell representative.

It was a real eye opener!

The competition was very tough with several national champions in attendance plus a few that are riding in senior Nationals.

Andrew did fantastically well with silver in the match sprint (9cm was the difference!)
He achieved bronze in the kilo with 4 tenths separating the top three!
It was not his best time by far, just down to conditions/nerves on the day.

Ed was really positive despite not qualyfying for finals.
He was riding a 90inch gear as he is concentrating on leg speed at the moment, the match sprint winner was pushing 106" !! (plus he was the only first year junior)

The Keirin was hotly contested and won by Matt Rotherham (google him!), Jack Hoyle U16 was second.
Andrew won the minor final finishing 7th overall. Ed was 4th in the rep.

Bearing in mind that they were there on their own without direct coaching they did fantastically well !!
Ed was one of only a handful without disc wheels. We discovered that several track based clubs own disc wheels that they lend to members. (not a critism of a youth based grass track club, just a fact!)

The lads and lasses that were at the top end were heavily mentored by their coaches and had hugely expensive kit.

Andrew has another 7 National events to attend this year, so good luck to him!

Hopefully there will be a few more juniors to enter the nationals next year plus some youth riders!

I'm keen to help with those that want to ride track so we can build a CCA contingent.
