Look Keo Cleats

edited December 2012 in General
I am trying to buy some Look Keo cleats for a new pair of shoe that I have just bought but once I started looking at the various online shops I became confused(easily done) and would like some help/advice
Firstly there are 'standard' or 'grip' which is best? There is only £2 of difference so it is not price that matters it is getting the best for my needs.
Secondly 'float' - black with 0 degrees, grey with 4.5 degrees and red with 9 degrees - which do I need, I will be using the shoes mainly for TTs and long distance Duathlons.
Any advice gratefully received

  • Grip is just the same but has bits of rubber on the bottom to make walking slightly easier and stop you slipping over on wet cafe floors and making a fool of yourself. It doesnt interfere with clipping in or performance.

Black with 0 float means you cannot move you foot from side to side at all and doesnt allow the foot to find its natural position when pedalling. If they are not set up perfectly, and that doesnt always mean straight, you will get knee problems. Not many people use them. Grey, with medium float is fine if you pedal fairly straight and are confident in setting them up right. Red probably the best bet as the set up doesnt need to be perfect and the foot will still find its natural biometric position. Reds can feel a bit floaty at first though as there is so much movement but you get used to it.
  • Spot on Tim, I actually use the grey ones, there is quite a bit of movement with the 4.5 degree of float !!! With regards grip, usually when cleats are bought you will get a pair of cleat covers too, these should prevent wear etc on them while at cafe stops etc..... :-)
  • Thanks guys, I have cleat covers and guess I will go for the grey, which is what I have previously had but only because that is what Tri Sports fitted when I bought the shoes not because I knew there were different ones to choose from. It was only because I bought the shoes on line this time and then went online to look for cleats that I came across this problem. But thanks for your help - problem solved.
  • I like the grips. They are good to walk on, seem to last quite a long time and save you having to remember to carry cleat covers about.
  • I bought the grey.

I had no idea there were three available, however, on the back of being told that a problem or two I was encountering was because of possibly too much float on the Crank Bros Candys, I think a couple of 2hr rides, 3 adjustments per ride soon sorted the foot position out very well indeed.

In all likeliness the grey would suit someone who has some idea that their legs are not quite straight and nor are their feet in the pedal (!) so on the back of the few rides I've had, I am a complete convert to the Grey since I know I'm slightly duck-footed by about -20 degrees on my L foot and the right is +5 degrees off centre, meaning it was a fairly simple matter of getting the cleat correctly set up on the shoes!

(5 weeks and still down with a cold I can't shake off)
