Power Man World Long Distance Duathlon Champs - Zofingen, Switzerland
On Sunday 8 Sep I lined up with a couple of hundred other qualifiers from around the world in what is considered as the 'daddy' of all duathlons - the Power Man Long Distance Duathlon which this year not only celebrated its 25th edition but also hosted the World Champs.
Having had 33 degrees of sun all the previous week in Switzerland the weather duely turned as the race started in pouring rain. So off we go the first run 10km - simple - only trouble the first mile is straight up hill and the remainder of the run is on very undulating woodland tracks on the side of a mountain.
Run one finished and it was onto a saturated bike for a 150km ride through the mountains - well actually the ride wasn't too bad, 3 x 50km with a couple of nasty climbs on each lap but about 10 miles of down hill on each lap. Quite a few came to grief on the bike in the wet conditions, thankfully I was not one of them and survived to get to the second run.
Run two - 30km, well I have been running for over forty years and I think this is probably one of the toughest run courses I have ever tackled. This was now time to dig deep and get into mind over matter mode because 'it hurt'.
So 9hours 37mins was enough to give me the silver medal, that I was very pleased to receive.
Rounded off a great year for me, British Duathlon Champion, English Duathlon Champion, UK long distance Duathlon Champion, European long distance Duathlon silver, World long distance Duathlon silver.
So time to thank those at CCA,a great club to be a very small part of and have a rest and contemplate next years programme.
