Crash on commute to work

Not a good morning for Emma today - on her commute to work a car went straight through a junction in front of her. She tried to stop/avoid them as luckily she was paying attention but couldn't avoid hitting the car. Her right shoulder took the full impact of the passenger car door before she came off. The police were called and Emma was despatched to the Lister in an ambulance. Aside from a lot of bruising the main damage is to the shoulder/collar bone where they join - not actually broken but something to do with the acromioclavicular ligament and a sub laxation! She is back at home now in a lot of pain awaiting a trip to the fracture clinic on Monday to determine the need for surgery. The driver has accepted full responsibility at least......

  • Sorry to hear that. Get well soon Emma.
  • Sorry to hear that, such a shame and it sounds very painful. Hope it looks set to mend without surgery, and that it mends quickly!

  • Terrible news - best wishes for quick recovery
  • Ouch. I'm sure you'll recover quick Emma. Keep us updated.
  • Sorry to hear this Emma. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Try to read up about the injury and don't be fobbed off with Dr's not wanting to do surgery. I now have a permanent step in my shoulder because I took their advice after a similar injury.

  • Hope you make a speedy recovery Emma. Thanks David for letting us know.
  • Hope you heal quickly Emma. Sounds pretty rubbish. On the plus side, new bike time! I'm pretty sure that Neil Murphy did almost exactly the same sort of damage to himself a while back, might be worth asking him about recovery etc.

British cycling recommend Leigh Day and Co solicitors for any personal injury claims. I used them when I was knocked off and broke my collarbone. They were great to deal with and a very friendly bunch.
  • Emma, hope the pain subsides and you get back on the bike soon. Keep positive.
  • Really sorry to hear Emma. We hope you recover quickly!

  • So sorry to hear that. As others have said, push for surgery. Take the time to heal well and you'll come back stronger. Enforced rest seems to be very good for you in the long run.

I spent a lot of time with Buryhill Physio in Hitchin. Thoroughly recommend them when you're ready.

    Heal well. Adam and Lil.
  • Thats a rubbish way to end a great season, im sure you will be back in no time and as Will says...new bike time!
    All the best.
  • Glad to hear you came off relatively ok, heal strong!
  • Sorry to hear Emma and I hope you heal quick. I've had a nasty AC joint injury and although the pain is awful at the start, it will get better. I think it's better when the collar bone breaks sometimes.

I didn't get surgery and I would encourage not to if you don't need it. A correct Physio programme will have it healed well if you follow it in a disciplined manner. Mine is almost fully healed although maybe not asthetically pleasing.
  • all been said Emma. Wish you a speedy recovery. Don't be fobbed off if YOU believe that surgery will be the answer. Just glad you were quick enough to avoid a worse injury. rubbish end to season.
  • Thanks everyone for your kind words and advice - its making me feel better. I'm really stiff today and can just about deal with the pain if I don't move! Seeing the specialist on Monday so will hopefully know more then.
  • Wishing you a fast and full recovery Emma.
  • All best Emma hope to see you back on the bike soon
  • Get well soon Emma. Hopefully it won't be too long.
  • Get well soon Emma, you'll be back up to full speed again before you know it!
  • Sorry to hear this Emma. Get well soon. Hopefully it's nothing serious.
  • Get well soon.
  • Ouch! just seen this and wish you a good recovery Emma.
  • Oh Dear - sorry to read this Emma - get well soon
  • All the best Emma, wishing you a speedy recovery.
  • What a shame! Get well soon! Don't hold back on going legal. The driver might be nice but the insurance company won't be.
  • Sorry to hear about the crash, hoping you feel better soon and make a good recovery.
  • Oh Emma, I am so sorry to read about this and do hope you make a full recovery as soon as possible. I am sure David will look after you well. Thinking of you and all your awful pain.
  • Emma sorry to hear this. A dislocated AC joint is a badge of honour, welcome to the club
