Club 10 Results - 20/6/2018

A very warm evening with a brisk Westerly wind - this meant swift outward journeys and as the wind died a touch PBs were the order of the day (8 from 13 Ashwell riders).

Very unfortunately Brendan had some sort of mechanical lock-up on the last hill and came off (possibly over the handlebars) with a suspected broken collar bone. Thanks to all those who stepped in to help sort out transport to Addenbrookes and car and bike return, especially Clare who expertly patched him up at HQ.

Also thanks to Dave W, Robert A, Stuart and Jackie for helping to run the event.

Despite another PB Andy was only 8th in the handicap this week whilst Nathan wins a free entry next week shaving 1:10 off his best time.

  • Brendan’s a true time trialist, when I got back to the HQ he had his arm in a sling and was looking at his Garmin saying “I was on for a low 22 too”. Priorities! I hope he recovers quickly. 2nd broken collarbone, therefore making him a proper, proper cyclist.

Just a general note to everybody riding these TTs, when you’re passing another cyclist (especially one who’s part of the TT) give a loud shout up as a warning. When people are riding full tilt they don’t always hold a straight line and it’s always nice to know if somebody’s going to come flying past you. A couple of riders went past me and Archie in not the safest manner this evening with no warning shouts...

Thanks to all the marshalls and timekeepers this evening. Always good to give something back to the club!

I'm back home after a very speedy pass through Addenbrookes A&E. Excellent care and far better than my experience in the Lister last year. Maybe I was just lucky tonight.

Thank you to everyone who stepped in to help me out, especially Clare for looking after me immediately after, Dave and Jenny for looking after my car, and Vince for taking me to (and waiting with me at) the hospital and bringing me home again. I really, really appreciate it. You've really helped me out.

I have a broken collarbone. It will be assessed by the orthopedic team in a few days and they will decide on the best treatment. If I'm lucky it will settle down and heal in a good position, but I'll just have to wait and see how it goes. If all goes well, it's approximately 6 weeks.

Regarding the accident itself, I think I understand what happend. I was changing gear (rear derailleur), but I think I accidentally also hit the button to change to the small chainring in the front at the same time, causing the chain to come off and get stuck, throwing me off the bike. It seems to be the one flaw I have found with electronic shifting - it is too easy to hit the button by accident when grabbing the handlebars. I went over and landed on the back of my shoulder.

The really annoying thing is that I was 15 seconds faster than last week before I came off. It would have been a decent PB. But it looks like it was a fast night out there. Well done Chris, great time.

It appears the bike got away without a scratch!
  • Cheers Brendan, you beat me to it. I am sure everyone was wanting an update to check you were ok.

James. We have terrible reception at home so couldn't reply to your text.

Take it easy Brendan and get back on the bike very soon.
  • Very sorry to read about you beating yourself up again Brendan. Speedy recovery.
  • Good to hear it might settle and you'll be recovered with still plenty of the summer left. You can scoop up those 15 seconds and many more - I'm sure.

    Keep us updated on progress.

Rest and get well soon Brendan!
  • Get well soon Brendan, that PB is still in reach this year!

So are you definitely not riding the IC 30 Brendan? :awesome:
  • Seems unlikely at the moment!
  • https://rouleur.cc/editorial/herentals/ This is a great article written by a friend of mine about treatment of collarbone fractures. It’s worth a read Brendan before you see the specialist. Hope you had a comfortable night. Just remember, in the early stages drugs are good. There is no point in being in pain.
  • I’ve just re-read the article - maybe don’t bother Brendan. Possibly a bit to graphic at the moment and not so helpful!
  • Hope you heal well!

What is the general advice then Claire? (out of future interest)
  • Wishing you a speedy recovery Brendan.
  • Lots of interesting new treatments - laser, surgical options, etc
  • So sorry to hear about this Brendan...you are fit and will heal quickly but it is all very traumatic...I’ve had 2 in my career..one was left the other was pinned ..feel free to chat if you wish...good luck
  • Great pic. How did the skin suit come out of the crash?
  • Thank you everyone for the good wishes. I think I was still suffer from shock when that picture was taken!

Some bruising is starting to come up in places now, and it's quite sore, but that will pass I'm sure.

The skin suit held up really well. Some small holes in the main impact area, but no big holes. I dare say it's still useable. But not sure if they will just tear through with further use.
  • least of your problems Brendan. Nasty thumb injury there :-)
