Hillingdon Winter Series

edited November 2010 in Road Racing
The Hillingdon Winter Series, organised by the Imperial Winter Series, will commence on 4th December.

The 3rd and 4th Cat. races start at 13.00hrs, the E123 Race starts at 14.15hrs.

For those in the 13.00hrs start I would suggest getting there are at 12.00hrs as the sign on will be hectic.

The link for the race series is here: -

Please read the code of conduct and the advice about your bike.

I'll be there with Joshua for the Cat3 race and I hope that CCA gets a good turn out.

  • Hi,

Brining this back to the top.

It was great to see Dave and Phil in the Cat. 3 race today. We think Dave got 6th and Phil 15th but we'll have to wait and see.

Joshua, we think, was 12th in the E123 race.

Anyway racing on 8/1/11 is for all ages and Cats. Youth racing starts around 12-12.15hrs and is for Under8,10,12,14 & 16 age groups

I will be there from just after 11am and staying all day as Joshua won't be finished until 3.30pm. Can anyone bring back Daniel and Rebecca if you have space in your car?

    Richard

  • Well done Daniel Doncaster.....

From the Imperial Racing Web site:

The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 12th place finisher Daniel Doncaster (CC Ashwell), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale
  • Wow, how exciting. I hardly ever win anything.....and I came 12th!

    Daniel
  • Hillingdon Cycling Circuit is a great facility; a closed racing circuit in North London with (now) a cosy clubroom providing teas and sweeties. There is racing most weekends. A number of us are doing either the Slipstreamers series (youth races) or for those too old the Imperial Winter Series.
From the perspective of a 4th cat Hillingdon races can be very hard or quite easy. A lot depends on the weather which often throws a few ‘curve balls’. Yesterday (Saturday Jan 29) it was bitterly cold; the pre race talk from the commissar concluded with ‘and your drinks will probably freeze in your bottles’.
Theo and Cameron were the first CCA riders off in the U16 race. A race of three sections. The 2 leaders were a lot more able than the other 4 riders, they got away and stayed away. Theo and Cameron were trailing the middle placed riders, by perhaps up to half a lap, but never gave up and put in a big effort near the end. They almost caught the third and fourth placed riders. An impressive demonstration to keep trying, it almost paid off. The U14 girl’s race was running at the same time and Rebecca Maynard came in 2nd (I think). Congratulations to her.
After the youth racing the 3rd and 4th cats have a go. Dave and Phil flew off with the 3rd cat pack whilst I enjoyed a departure with the ramshackle 4th cats half a lap later. An uneventful 40 minutes later heralded the 5 laps to go board and then the bell lap. One guy got ways from the pack to take first place. The rest of us making a disparate dash for the line. I was able to pick my way through to 7th place; which I was pleased with. Many thanks to shouts of support from CCA friends on the sidelines; it’s a big help. The third cats finished a few laps later. Dave claiming 4th or 5th place (we think). Phil got blocked in and ended frustrated.
The final race had non of the right blue shirts in it, but our close associate Josh Maynard raced it. He finished well up in the pack, but I’m afraid I don’t know his placing. (Josh?)
So lots of fun. Come along to check it out, or come and race!
    Daniel
  • Well done to Dave, is the second cat getting nearer?, unlucky Phil, thats sprinting. Daniel, is that some points in the bag? an excellent 7th place.

For all you sportivers wondering how to get off the "performance plateau" take note, there is only one way and racing is it.

    Great stuff.
  • Is a racing licence step 1?
  • James,
A racing licence CAN be step 1. A faster first step is to show up next Saturday and get a day licence. Racing at 13:00 sign on a bit before.
    A few points;
    1) It's not too hard
    2) Much easier with more team mates ; - )
    3) You don't HAVE to pull stupid faces if you don't want to.

    See you there?

    Daniel
  • Racing at Hillingdon was hard on Saturday (Feb 5th); anyone who ventured out will have noticed the wind was blowing! In the 4th cats I was joined by Pete Green and we set off trying to stay near the front. Things got strung out a bit and I found myself knitting the field together down the hellish wind swept back straight. Shortly after this a lead group got away and I had no reserves to follow it. Thus the chasing group tried to form into a ‘through and off’ formation, but in reality this was like trying to herd cats, 4th cats at that. Come the final lap I did not contest the sprint and came in a shameful 20th, which is silly because I could have done better. I apologise to the club. Pete lost contact with the chasing group at some point; so it proved his first experience of circuit racing Hillingdon was at its hardest. I’m sure he’ll be back though.
In the 3rd cats I noticed Dave retiring early; hope you are okay Dave? I know Phil had a hard race (that wind). He came in 14th, I couldn’t tell if he looked cross from being boxed in or pushed off track (like the previous week), but certainly once over the line he was cyclo cross as too much traffic sent him into the rough!
No idea what happened in the E123, except Josh came 12th.
In the Youth race Daniel Maynard gets my nomination for ‘rider of the day’. He battled on his own to successfully regain contact with a leading group; a tough challenge on a day like that. I’m afraid I don’t know how Rebecca did.
In the U16s it was good to see Jon make his first appearance of the season, like Pete a hard day to ride but I am sure he learnt plenty. The old hacks at the front stayed together with Cameron and Theo working well together. Theo came in as the second U16 over the line with Cameron close behind.
Last race in the Youth and Adult series at Hillingdon next Saturday before we head east to Redbridge (aka Hog Hill) for a few weeks.
It’s not always this hard, I promise, come along as it’s more fun than an hour on the turbo!
    Daniel
  • A very good summation of events I think Daniel, fortunately the conditions are looking good for this Saturday and the Mercury is rising.
I'll be there for more punishment and I've booked on-line again so I'm a definite.
Let me know if you need me to drive again.
  • It was a day of seconds today.
Theo came second in the U16 ably supported by Cameron making repeated digs to wear the sprinters down. Jon improved significantly on his outing last week. Rebecca came in second in the girls U14. Not sure where Daniel M came in. Oliver Woolsey rode his first race (U12) and commented afterwards ‘That was harder than I thought ‘. Well done Oliver!
The 4ths pushed off and had a much easier race than last week. Pete Green had learnt from last week and was well up in the mix the whole race. We worked as best we could to be at the front for the closing laps. Mojo restored Pete sprinted for respectable 17th. Not sure where I came, but some places down on Pete. The field was much larger than previous weeks.
In the 3rds Phil finished well (sorry don’t know the place). Dave a bit further down the field. Sadly there was an accident just after the finish line. The victim suffering a suspected broken rib and collar bone. Stewart has it on tape (not sure I want to see it).
The E123 go so much faster than the mortals! From where I was Josh looked to be well in the thick of it. An impressive 4 man break stuck with the series winner taking the line.
So not only Pete and Jon’s second race of the season and Rebecca and Theo’s second place the series rankings brought glory.
Theo coming second in the Hillingdon Slipstreamers Winter Series (U16).
Daniel M coming second in the Hillingdon Slipstreamers Winter Series (U14).
Rebecca coming second in the Hillingdon Slipstreamers Winter Series (U14G).
Dave coming second in the Imperial Racing Winter Series.
Furthermore Phil was placed 8th in the series.
8 CCA riders there today. The Youth will be at Hog Hill in a couple of weeks; certainly some very old youth will be racing too. Join us.
...and finally Pete Green was the second CCA rider to win a Wyndy Millar Bike Fit prize. Well done mate, I look forward to seeing the photo on the web site.

Having privately procrastinated for a month or so, I finally decided to go racing last Saturday (5th Feb) at Hillingdon to join my braver club mates in the weekly ritual of getting beaten up on a bike for fun. Unfortunately I probably chose a bad day for it as the wind was gale force countrywide, however, I was unperturbed and dug in. At which point I decided I was out of my league and promptly got blown out the back of the bunch quicker than I was going forwards. By this time it was all over as fighting a wind like that I had no chance of getting back on, so I did the only thing left to do which was to complete the course watching merrily as the 4th cats lapped me once and the 3rd cats lapped me countless times. I'm putting that one down to experience and the revelation of.....
LESSON NUMBER ONE - do not wear a heart rate monitor when you're racing and think you're going to keel over because the numbers you can see on the computer are telling you that you're really too old for this sort of thing and perhaps you should slow down, catch some breath and go and get a nice cup of tea in the club house. Anyway, lesson learnt, embarrassment behind me, move on...........

To race number 2 (for me, but alas last race of the winter series at Hillingdon), and happy in the knowledge of newly learnt lesson number one, I find my name mysteriously on the start sheet again. This time I thought, if only I can stay with the bunch and lend my fellow 4th cat warrior Daniel the team mate he needs. Two or three laps in I think to myself "this time last week I was toast" and then "but hang on just a minute, this week I'm not only still with the peloton, I actually feel OKAY". So on I went, and learnt several more lessons, keep your line, don't panic on the tight left, right, left bends after passing the start/finish line and don't let any gaps appear in front because you have to work mighty hard to get back up. I could literally hear the guys around me breathing hard which gave me confidence because I didn't seem to be breathing that hard. Forty minutes in, the bunch is still as one with no successful breaks and the 5 lap to go board comes out as we cross the line again. "Here we go" I think to myself, now we'll see if I can keep up. Daniel and I reassure each other with little taps on the back to let the other know that we're both still in the hunt. It makes for a great feeling to know that there's another guy there with the same shirt on as you. In the blink of an eye we're on the bell lap and it all gets a bit frantic. One attacks down the back straight and a dozen sweaty blokes shout "GET HIM", two or three jump, the whole pack speeds up and into the last couple of bends, slightly up hill through a small chicane to the finish line now and I'm Mark Cavendish (Yeah Right), but seriously I'm sprinting hard to just stay with the bunch, everybody around me is full gas and hurting, finally I cross the line with 3 or 4 others to claim 17th out of a field of 30-40 (not sure), Daniel finishing only a breath behind me. Overall, I'm happy to have finished with the main field and feel at last like a real 'racer'. But now I'm buzzing and want to go again, well maybe in a week or two eh.

It's an excellent experience and it's clich
  • Chapeau to you all.

And special mention must go to the CCA Tifosi; they were awesome - when the pain became too much to bear (and it did!), or you just weren't feeling your racing self, those shouts of c'mon Ashwell, c'mon Dave, c,mon Phil were truly uplifting and they forced you dig just a little deeper into those reserves you thought you didn't have - So thanks to you all for the great support throughout the series - really appreciated........
  • Great stuff CCA, Well done PG for the wyndy miller prize, i can tell from the write up that you really enjoyed it. Tremendous to see the clubs racing scene blossoming. Thats where its at!!
