Club run review - Sunday 28th September 2008
A very successful Middle Group ride led by Geoff in the Autumnal warmth [the last Sunday before leg warmers..?]. 13 of us linked two existing routes together to create a 46 mile jaunt heading west - thru Langford, Henlow and so on to the terrifically named Higham Gobion - then turning up Hexton Hill [One puncture for Mark]. Through the valley near Luton airport [well the planes fly low anyway] which was spectacular in scenery and we got very pacey in the light breeze. Survived the bumps of Lilley and then turned back east around the watercressed Whitwell into Old Knebworth, Knebworth, Aston and then up through Walkern and Slip End. 18.2mph average.
We were lucky to catch the 3rd cat race with CC Ashwell representatives zooming along. I saw Trahern and gave a yell of encouragement - though at their speed I'm not sure it registered. Indeed there were a lot of cyclists on the road - and a couple of moron Zafira drivers. Looks the Olympic effect is wearing thin now.
Phil detoured near the end to include Benington - that might be a nice way to make it a 50 miler. It would be good to map this ride and use it for the chillier times ahead.
James Boyle bagged the sprint. It's nice to see a few Club runners stepping up to the Middle Group and staying there. I think it's looking in good shape now actually. The Club Run was healthy looking too. They went heading in the opposite direction - looping around Barkway which is pretty at this time of year too. You know it's all going well when the coffee runs out quickly at Andy's and Karen's afterwards.
