club run review - Sunday 26th October

Well, where do we start..? 5 punctures, 2 chains off, collapsing gears and Geoff's clacking bottom bracket.

14 in the Middle Group/Club Run - and maybe 5-6 in a fast group. An excellent turn out - considering the wet conditions [though it wasn't cold and the wind was light]. Some newish and returned faces - always a good thing.

This was my shortest club run in some time - but a wise move in the weather. Down Slip End, through to Ardeley, around Dane End and environs and then back through Walkern. Lots of gravel spewed up by the rains [hence the punctures] but not often we have to yell 'mud'. It was good to see greater prudence than Gordon Brown on the downhills and through the large puddles.

Found ourselves going the wrong way against the Stevenage End of Summer Audax. A very good turnout for those guys. And a father/son CCA in attendance too.

Chilvarous moment of the day was the retrieval of Jon's bike computer that flew off on some downhill [though we suspect it was a deliberate attempt to get an upgrade...].

The sprint was ably won by David Swain - by half a wheel from me [Where was Boyle?]. Andy was in the pack and Phil put in an admirable turn on his fixy. I did get to see David grimace for the victory as he sped past the Give Way sign. This is some kind of second place reward.

Thanks to Geoff for attending to every puncture I think - and for having his good three-quarter pump. The general murmuring under the dripping oak tree on puncture 3 was that it was time to get the Bontragers on with their puncture resistance. That, or get yerself a pair of Andy Bartlett's yellow tyres - offering flint no hiding place.
