Club run review - Sunday 4th January 2009

An astonishing 31 riders out this morning fighting the mince pie guilt. Ice cold 1 degree stuff. Light winds from the westish.

12 out in a faster group and a [too big on reflection] 19 in a Club Run. We thought we could have done three groups. Another reminder that preplanned rides might be a good idea.

Things in the 12 got off to a fantastic start - then two minutes into the ride - Carmelo's inner tube explodes. There's a New Year's Eveful of broken champagne and booze bottles around Rushden. So it came as no suprise that there were further punctures getting towards Walkden. Picked up a couple of riders from the idling 19 as we went past.

Down to Watton at Stone, right to Datchworth. Another puncture and we lost Phil who preferred the other way. Onwards towards Ayot, including a big downhill to test Robbie's leg spinning on his fixie. Kimpton and around towards Lilley. Will was suffering - only having his Shreddies for breakfast! Respect to the group for getting Will through with helping hands.

Up the 'wrong way' over Hexton Hill. Shillington, Henlow and Langford to Ashwell - shedding riders along the way as the punctures had added a lot of time to the ride and people needed to get on with the Sunday Roast. 57 miles, 17mph average.
