  • Eagle Road Race 19th June report

Carmelo, Jason and myself all raced in the Eagle Road Race yesterday. The course, roughly 16km, was based around Ugley, Newport,
Wicken Bonhunt. Clavering and Rickling Green is a bit lumpy but nothing of any note, although it was windy (again!). I’ve not ridden that course before but some of the roads are smooth and wide = fast, and some are narrow and a bit twisty = still fast! and some go uphill, which seemed to me to result in a slow peloton speed.

A cool morning to start with a bit of dampness on the road, soon cleared and the short neutralised zone was ticked off at racing speed. My tactics (if I can call them tactics) was to stay out of sight, out of the wind and then have a go on the last lap. And that’s what I did, I spent the first 3 laps in the final 3rd of the field, Carmelo and Jason further up. The bunch all stayed together with riders yo yoing through the peloton. There were a few cars out on the road which resulted in some close shaves but I don’t recall seeing any incidents. The route was actually well marshalled, with some of them having power to stop the traffic, which is a lot more reassuring.

On the penultimate lap, I started to move up the field to try and get a good position for the last lap, probably mid placed at the start of the last lap, legs felt good, having managed to stay out of the wind for the most part. Between Wicken Bonhunt and Clavering there’s quite a long drag, which you don’t really notice in the bunch, which was my cue to have a go. Following a rider (from Finchley RT I think) to the front, I moved up the line and when he pulled over, I just kept pedalling, I looked round after about 10 seconds, to see a gap of about 50 metres, kept on pushing and that’s when I noticed that the drag was really a drag and the wind was a bit stronger than I’d thought! I could feel the energy draining and the bunch gaining. I got taken over shortly thereafter, but rather than being shot out the back, I got myself together and recovered quicker than I’d thought I would and held on. Carmelo and Jason had passed me at this point and were looking good. Jason had also had a go at the front earlier on in the race and I think I saw Carmelo up there as well.

So, thinking that I might have another go in the sprint, which was inevitable, I got myself positioned round the last tight left hander, down the hill and my gears started slipping and my legs started to show signs of cramping and that was it for me. The route to the finish was also narrow with a couple of twists and after what happened in the Techniflo race, I didn’t want to risk a spill, so just rolled in over the line, for a mid table finish I think. Carmelo may have just scraped a top 10, with Jason a little further back. Pleased to have got round without any mishaps, and to have had a go off the front, even if it was short lived!

So after my first 3 road races, I’ve had a crash (techniflo), a DNF (Primavera) and a mid table. So I must be improving. Next stop, a top 10 and some points ????
