My first taste of Ironman racing

edited June 2011 in General
Well Sunday was my first ever experience of Ironman racing at the Wimbleball half Ironman event.

This involved 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike leg and then 13.1 mile run.

I had trained hard for this race but nothing can prepare you for the initial 10 minutes of the swim. I can only say it was very scary with 1700 other racers all scrambling for some clear water. Once this cleared i found my stroke and completed the swim in 42 minutes which is good for me.

Then my comfort zone of the bike. I had many flashbacks to last years Chiltern “Hilly” Hundred during this section with 6000ft of climbing over the 56 mile route. I survived this bit in 3 hours 28 mins.

Then the run. This was 13.1 miles of pretty much up and down off road style track. This had 1300ft of climbing which is tough on the calfs and hamstrings. Not sure where my energy came from but i completed this leg in 1 hour 55 minutes. Not bad considering what i had already been through.

I finished with a time of 6 hours 19 minutes which i was really pleased with considering this was my first longer distance triathlon.

Now for the full distance Ironman race next month in Bolton.

  • Well done Andy, Wimbleball is not the ideal one to start with so a brilliant result, you will love Bolton - good luck enjoy it (if you can enjoy an Ironman)
  • Well done Andy. The toughest half in the UK.
Not sure how Geoff can put the words 'love' and 'Bolton Ironman' together!
  • It's a Bolt-On event Robbie...you know like adding on after doing something really tough :-) seriously, well done Andy.and respect to you nutters....couldn't even run 5 miles at that pace, but to cycle and swim as well......
