With all this talk about long distance rides and trips on the forum, this time - we're going back
way back.
Just over 27 years ago, a sprightly Robert Swain was packing his French-English phrasebook and a baguette ['French stick' in them days I recall] from Days of Ashwell to head for Paris. In a time before the Blue Train and the word sportive, he was a member of the then flourishing Lantern Rouge taking on the epic Paris-Roubaix classic.
A jolly good write-up and a couple of name-checks from what sounds like hell, here, in the then Cycling magazine.
He must have enjoyed it - we've got his card for the same event the next year.
Well done Bob!

Apparently - in '81 they let you do the loop in the velodrome. Nice! 1982 - 7,000 riders, potential for bedlam, so it had to finish elsewhere.
Cheers Mike!
so who is going to organise a CCA outing to P/R in 2013.........2012 is taken with the June LEJOG and our Autumn trip to France in Sept/Oct
We obviously have seasoned veterans who can advise
The traditional Paris-Roubaix Cyclo-Sportive is currently only held every two years in early June. Stevie and I have ridden the last two versions - there is a thread with our report of last years somewhere. There is a 60mile option (from Arenberg) a 100mile option (which takes in all the cobbled sections) and the full 160mile option for which you need lights because it starts in the dark. It does finish with a lap of the track, beer and frites, a souvenir cobblestone and showers in the famous stalls. This version will be run again in 2012. The feed stations were fantastic and the entry fee is only about 15 euros. I think the whole event is run by a consortium of local clubs.
There was a new version which ran last summer but it didn't finish at the velodrome. I don't know if it will be an annual affair. I think it was run by The Tour de France organising firm who also run the race.
If anyone is interested in riding then I can give advice and put you in touch with Scott who organised our trip. He takes a coach over with a bike trailer.
Mark.
Scott has sent me information for his trip to the Paris Roubaix Sportive on the 10th June. Anyone interested in going, contact me for details.
