Grafham Cross
The 9th round of the Eastern Cyclo-Cross League saw the competition visit Grafham Water for the very first time. The course was incredibly long, and despite there not being any 'proper hills' in the area, there was barely a perfectly flat strech of course at all. The dry and cracked land made for incredibly bumpy riding, and the organisers ensured their race would not be forgotten by taking the route over three sections of beach. The sand and shingle made for incredibly difficult riding (or running, as many riders resorted to) as you struggled to get your rear wheel to dig in.
The day saw another good show from CC Ashwell. First up, Phil Keen took a strong 42nd place in the Vets and Stevie Wyer took an impressive 9th in the Womens race. Later in the day, James Fraser's (U10) impressively determined style got him 19th position on a surprisingly hard U12s course and I finished 13th in the Youth race, my best CX result so far. Finally, Mark Wyer took 26th in the almost scarily fast Elite race that the flat(er) course made for. Another strong show sees CC Ashwell secure 9th place in the club table, a full 22 points ahead of our nearest rivals (Ford CC).
