Rider Weight

edited June 2012 in Club runs
Just for interest found in Joe Friel book and I believe published elsewhere. This calculation; twice your height in inches into your body weight in pounds should equal 2.1 or less, for a light rider that would mean be better climbing standing, above 2.1 better sitting to climb. Example 10 stone = 140lbs and 5foot 10inches = 70inches x 2 + 140 therefore score is 2. Push your weight up for the same height and figure goes over 2. I think that makes sense, work your own score out. Personally I come in at 2.1 and I don't think I am particularly fat, in fact I am probably a skinny b....

  • No too dissimilar in principle to the 220 minus age formula for max heart rate; the ideal athletic weight can be equated broadly to 1kg per inch of height. Therefore, 5'10" = 70kg......simples.
  • Is it the same formula for women?

And surely it depends on which sport you want to be 'ideal' weight for? 100m runner vs marathon runner ...

PS Geoff, you are not fat
  • Agree Jane, this was for cyclists (and then for long course i.e. 112mile bike ironman triathletes) obviously much different for runners at all the various distances, I will go back and check the reference but dont think there was a male/female differentiation although you would imagine that there would be.
