OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY 5pm 8th JULY

edited June 2012 in General
As you all know the Olympics is looming ever larger on the horizon and Ashwell is having its very own Olympic torch relay on 8th July to celebrate this truly momentous sporting occasion. To help with the village celebrations our Cycle club has been invited to begin the relay and actually accompany the Olympic torch into the village. Astonishingly we will accompanying a genuine Olympic torch carried by John Mayor, who has been chosen as one of the torch bearers on the Stevenage leg of the official torch relay. John's impressive sporting credentials can all be found on the link below.

As we've been given the honour of beginning Ashwell's Olympic torch relay it would be wonderful to have as many CCA riders, of all ages and abilities, as is humanly possible to participate in this event.

Our relay will begin at the very same location we all sign on for the club 10 - The concrete pad situated just outside the village on Northfields Road, Ashwell. This location ensures that its a relatively short ride to Ashwell rec enabling even the very youngest CCA members to safely participate. We all need to meet at Northfields no later than 16:45 on the 8th July. The relay is then scheduled to commence at 17:00hrs;
all in in all this will probably take no more than an hour of everyone's time. The relay will stay together and ride at the pace of the slowest rider all the way to rec, accompanied by John Mayor bearing a real Olympic torch - COOL!

If that's not enough, you can continue to follow the Olympic relay around the village, AND all participants will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation on the day.

If you want to stay to the end, the event will culminate in the lighting of Ashwell's Olympic Beacon at the rec at about 6.30pm.

So lets have as many blue shirts as we can possibly muster to participate in this great Olympic celebration - SEE YOU THERE!

Please note, timings are approximate as they depend on the Village sports day finishing on time.

From Duncan Wardrop..one of the organisers....

I have in my possession a Bell Avanti cycling helmet that was left on the
rec at about the place where CCA handed over the torch today. Could you put
out an e-mail to the multitude please, and a phone call to 742861 could
    reunite headgear and owner.

Everybody appreciated the cyclists contribution to todays event and it
worked very well indeed. Ashwell doing what Ashwell does!

Thanks to everyone from CCA who contributed.....who left their helmet none of us I preasume ??
  • BIG thanks to all you CCA folks that turned out to represent our club. Whilst there wasn't a huge number of us, we did have a wonderfully broad range of ages and we formed ourselfs into the most perfect peleton. Once we'd handed over the torch to the next sporting group I continued to follow the olympic procession around the village.

With each successive hand over of the torch the number of particpants grew and grew until we took over, not just the footpath, but the entire road. The finale was the lighting of the Olympic beacon on the rec, and it didn't disappoint. Ashwell's Olympic celebrations were quite simply brilliant, with so many people and sporting clubs involved it all added to the grand sense of occassion.

Thank you so much to all those that turned out to represent our wonderful cycling club.

  • Just bringing this to the top again, can anyone tell me more about the above mentioned certificate ? Cheers ;-)
  • I can confirm that I'm now in possession of the Olympic certificates. Can all those that took part please "whisper" your details i.e. name of rider, and address. I will then happily either pop it through your letter box or post it to you. Alternatively, you can email your details to me at jo@adamsjp.freeserve.co.uk. Cheers.
  • Phil, I'm up at Ashwell on Wednesday for the club 10, if that's any help....?? Cheers Nigel
  • Perfect Nigel, I'll pop along to the TT. Cheers.
  • Carolyn, I'll pop it in the post. Cheers.
