Anglo polymer (St Ives RR) 10th May
This morning saw 80 riders roll out from Huntingdon for the 55mile RR. CCA was represented by Carmelo & myself. It was fast from the start I immediately went on a break with 3 other riders, but it came to nothing. I then went on a further 3 or 4 break attempts as riders tried to get away. Each tim they were brought back. All the time I managed to keep at the front of the pack, out of trouble. Carmelo vanished, I later found out he had punctured, but kept going for training.
A break of 6 riders got away on lap 4 nad it looked like it might stick. The pack worked very hard on and off and slowly pulled them back over the next lap & a half.
Onto the last lap, & it was looking like the usual sprint finish for this race. However, 3 riders again got away ( 2 followed by a chaser) and the pack stated to reel them in again. Half a lap from the end I was in the top 15 and feeling good. At that point someone came up the outside & cut across, knocking another rider into me. I crashed heavily at about 30mph, taking down 5 other riders and most of the race stopping behind the mess.
After that I beleive the race was won by a Cambridge CC rider (one of the 3) managing to hold out just infront of the reduced chasing group.
I got treated by the St John Ambulance and am now very scrapped & battered. My race bike is now a mess and will need looking at over the next few days.
It could be worse, one other racer had abroken collar bone & another a broken rib, so I got away relatively lightly, but I will now need a new Ashwell top!!!
A well timed rest next week.
