Well it maybe just a touch warmer tomorrow, but still not quite spring.....

Haven't done this one for a while, so lets do Ashwell, Sandon, Buntingford, Great Hornmead, Clavering, Little Chishill, Barley, Therfield, Ashwell

Might also be a sting in the tail with the addition of Coobe down hill at the end, but that will be a surprise when we get there !

See you tomorrow,

  • do we need to bring 5 spare inner tubes each.....or are we avoiding puncture alley?
  • Oh no, we are definitely avoiding the road between Sandon and kelshall after the last experience! Don't think that I would recommend summer tyres for any of the roads just yet either

Ten of us out this morning for an excellent jaunt into a quite hilly Essex. Pretty much up and down from the start and contrary to the weather forecast into quite a keen and cold NE wind.

All was going well till Barley when some lack of geographical knowledge by the chaps on the front meant we added on a few more lumps through shaffenhoe end. A bit of a loop back to barley put us back on track but a peloton split meant half of the group went heads down towards fowlmere and half on the right road towards Royston/Newsells/Reed. Luckily the wayward group noticed they were depleted and headed back on the right route for us all to meet up in Reed. From there it was mostly altogether back to Ashwell and a fairly lacklustre sprint to the sign as there were heavy legs all round.

Bike handling prize of the day goes to the new guy Craig who recovered spectacularly (with a bit of help from AndrewR) after hitting a pothole just outside Sandon.

So 42 @ just a shade under 15 for some of us and a bit more for the extra 'almost to fowlmere' chaps.

Thanks all for a great ride in some almost warm sunshine.

  • Nice to finally be out in some sun even though it was hard work with my dodgy lungs. Thanks to those that rode with me at times - my heart rate monitor confirmed my weakened state when it told me it had been close to 160 bpm for 4 hours - obviously this includes my ride to and from Ashwell. Hopefully back to full strength next week to give you all a run for your money :-)
