Turbo trainer, need advice

edited April 2013 in General
So I thought i would share this deal at wiggle, because it's so good

My question is... I have a spare 700c wheel which I am going to get a turbo tyre and skewer for, but the cassette is pretty badly worn. My bike currently has a pretty much brand new 105 cassette on it... should I buy a new casette for the turbo wheel? and if so, can it just be a tiagra one or should it be 105? I am asking mainly with regards to worrying about not putting undue stress/wear on my chain (thinking long-term)..... do I even need to bother?

Cheers

  • Fwiw, I do not even bother with a different tyre.
No idea if this is correct or not but I am distinctly not precious about my kit.
I do own a plastic turbo tyre (somewhere) but no 2nd wheel.
  • i would recommend a turbo tyre (plastic) as they are supposedly quieter and reduce the amount of heat in the tyre so it is less likely to puncture your inner tube. and the cassette, as long its the latest tiagra the 10 speed it will be fine, wont add wear to your chain the only thing which is different is that the cassette will be heavier.
  • Jon's said it all Nat. definitely get a turbo tyre..ask Robbie what happens if you don't :-)
  • Thanks! that's helped. Obviously i don't mind about the weight. haha yeah, always intended to get the tyre... I can imagine
  • Further to my post.
As per my tyre that I showed Sunday's group rides: do not ride a turbo trainer on your road bike tyres unless they're intended solely for the use of a turbo trainer as they become delaminated after an hour or so, depending on the compound in part, but to be avoided at all costs, mine were worn down to the carcass; not a smart move.
