Hog Hill Grand Prix

edited April 2013 in Road Racing
James rode the Under 10 race at the Hog Hill Grand Prix today, the first event in the National Youth Circuit Race Series. It was quite a step up from the regional-level races he's ridden at Redbridge. What a professionally run event - and to cope with four or five hundred riders coming from every corner of the UK, it needed to be.

It wasn't a good day to be riding with tired legs, though, and he was dropped from the main bunch after a few laps. He stuck to his guns and chased alone for the rest of the race, perhaps finishing 18th or so. He was very disappointed, but it was great experience of a big event.

We couldn't stay to watch later races, but Dan & Rebecca were due to be in action for Welwyn in the U16 events, and several of the CC Ashwell junior squad were entered for their race at the end of the day. Judging by the speed of the U10s and U12s, the speed of the national-standard U16 and Junior events must have been incredible.

  • Hi Mark,
Well done to James in making the big step up to National Series Racing.

Rebecca had probably one of the best races of her career and finished around 20th. Dan was not quite as successful and was lapped with 5 to go in what was a very quick race.

The Junior race was also very quick with a big field containing a number of organised teams. Theo battled away on his own but eventually succumbed to the pressure and was lapped.

Finally I'd like to echo Mark's comments about the very professional running of the event by LVYCC lead by Terry Morgans-Slader, across the board nearly 500 riders took part and along with their parents and supporters this made for a packed Hogg Hill.

  • It was a fantastic days racing. After heading down to watch James' race I stayed at the bottom of the circuit the whole day and helped with marshalling. I'm sure Theo can explain for himself but he didn't have the best day, having to ride on un-matching pedals after breaking one before the start and suffering stomach cramps.

The Under 16's boys race was absolutely brutal ('a very quick race' doesn't really do it justice). If anyone wants to see the most vicious, all action flat out attacking racing then go and see our Under 16 boys at national level. 120 riders all trying to rip each other to shreds. A very good effort by Dan considering.

To give you an idea of where we have progressed from in this country I co-promoted the National Youth Champs about 15 years ago at Dartford. We had about 70 riders.... all Under 16/14 boys and girls together in one race.
    Mark.
