Eagle RR 24th May
Sunny Sunday saw 60 riders leave Ugley onto the course for the 96km Cat 3/4 Eagle RR. CCA had Carmelo,Richard Law & myself riding. There was a strong field with a large groupd from Cambridge CC, Finchly RT & Eagle. The pace was fairly fast and breaks of 3 & 4 riders tried to get away , but were chased down each time. At the end of the 2nd lap was the firt prime, which Richard took. Carmelo had a good go with about 10 riders at the start of lap 4, but this again was chased down after 3 or 4 miles (the lead car doin its best to take out the lead rider!!). I had a few litle digs, but was more concerned with making sure nothing fell off after my crash.
So surprise surprise it turned into a bunch sprint up the narrow road to the finish. At this point my legs started to give (that's what 2 weeks off the bike does for you) so I slowly dropped off the pack as the drag to the line continued. The Eagle team clearly had tactics & 2 riders led out a third who took the win.
Our Richard sprinted through to take 2nd place, Carmelo took the wrong line & crossed the line in the bunch.
A fair bit of cramp all round with the hot weather. First race this season all three of us have finished, without crashing or puncturing
In the car park at the end I overheard a rider telling the chief commissaire how fantastic it was that Ashwell puts on a 4th cat only race on the open road and that more clubs should do it.
no racing for me this weekend, so I'll see whoever's not doing the 100miler at the garage at 9am
