Wheeeeeeeeeeeels

edited May 2013 in General
Does anybody know a good wheel builder/fixer to use? I've just snapped a spoke on a back wheel that's previously been trued by a local shop, there was so much tension on it that the wheel was so out of shape I could barely ride it home... Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Ta.

  • I can put a new spoke in and retrue, but it sounds like the rim has had it. If the rim has been bent in a previous knock and there is a huge amount of tension on one spoke to hold it straight then it will likely do it again.

What rims are they? is it worth a new rim and rebuild?
  • The rim's fine I think. It's a shimano C24 rim, they're supposed to be hard as nails, I think when it was trued before it was over tensioned and under tensioned on the opposite side? Does that make sense? Hopefully not a new rim needed...

It just couldn't hack the raw power that I was putting through it as I was desperately trying to keep a wheel of a very small, very light cyclist that "enjoys" hills half way up horn hill... Erm....
  • Plenty of folk claim they can build/true wheels but it is really an art, I only use Mike at Townsends Cambridge (AKA Light Blue) owned by ison distributon. Or if I have the time to wait, Jerry at Jt Cycles Chettisham he is the real deal at building wheels.

  • For what it's worth, I rate Townsends Light Blue too.
Bought my Scott CR1 from them. Customer service has been excellent too. (They put certain other local bike shops to shame)
  • Jane,

I know where you are coming from, I would describe Townsends as your Bread and Butter type shop and possibly one of the oldest Bike shops in Cambridge.
