Welcome to the forum
Thursday June 13th
I had a great ride last night. Rode to Bath up the cycle track from Bristol with James Dobbin and due to the generous tail wind this turned into a turbo charge. So I arrived smiling. We then went along (through) the newly opened Two Tunnels cycle path this is still a thrill and, bizzare as it sounds, the views are amazing. We then climbed up to Down (Odd) and James suggested we take a look at the newly opened and purpose built Cycle Circuit there.
Here we met some chap from (I think) Bath CC who was just closing up a container having run a training session (sounds familiar?) He spoke of how many kids and adults they are getting and how enthusiastic they are and how quickly they are picking up skills. I spoke briefly of our own experiences with our Grass Track. It was genuinely exciting that there is so much positive activity to get, and use, appropriate cycle facilities. A consortium has been formed from the local clubs and races are run on a Tuesday evening with training sessions on Wednesdays. (Perhaps a blue shirt should race there soon?)
James and I couldnt resist a quick go, so hopped over the fence and rode a lap. Just shy of a mile and the track is surprisingly wide in places. Essentially a hot dog circuit (bent at both ends, so more of a Cumberland hot dog). The interest comes in the detail of how the track is laid out with some interesting cambers to make picking the right line important. It is quite exposed and not pan flat so the weather will change the character of any race. Perfect smooth tarmac.
There are some off-road facilities as well, which I think I will experience in a forthcoming Western Summer Cross League race.
More information here
To complete the evening I rode back via Corston and Keynsham. Despite the hearty head wind I was so inspired I didnt even notice!
Life is good.
