Help! Struggling to change a chainring

Anyone out there to offer advice? I am trying to change the chainring on Sophie's track bike. I have got the old one off but cannot get the new ring onto the middle bit with the pedals on (sorry for the lack of technical talk: hubby is away and I have never so much as mended a puncture). If anyone has any helpful suggestions then I would be grateful, as I am reluctant to resort to the hammer just yet.

    Do you mean that the new ring physically doesn't fit onto the crank's spider? There are very many different sizes of ring and they only fit cranks with matching dimensions. Are you certain the new one is correct for Sophie's bike's particular crank? As a first step overlay the two chainrings and see if the bolt holes all line up with each other.

    I'm not that blond! I just couldn't get it to push in the final mm. I think I have managed now though, thanks.
