Eastern Regional Track Championship
The club had two members racing in this year's regional track championships at Welwyn track on Sunday: Sophie L (Under 12 youth) and James F (Under 10 youth). It was another blisteringly hot day but the officials (including Richard and Alison Maynard) ran the programme very smoothly and as quickly as possible.
This year all championships (including seniors) were decided by an Omnium format:-
- time trial
- elimination race ("devil")
- match sprint
- scratch race
Neither Sophie nor James were in ideal shape against rivals who had been training and racing at Welwyn two or three times per week: Sophie had been under the weather for a while, and James hadn't ridden on a hard track at all for five weeks.
The Ashwell riders battled well throughout the afternoon though. Going into the final event James was lying in second place overall, just one point behind the leader, and becoming the regional champion was still a possibility. It wasn't to be, though, and at the end of the event he finished in the silver medal position on the Under 10 podium. Sophie finished seventh in the Under 12 category against some very strong boys, claiming third place amongst the girls.

P.S. Wearing their Welwyn colours Josh, Dan and Rebecca M all ended the day on the podium. Rebecca showed a lot of grit by competing while bandaged after being taken out by another rider in a nasty crash at the track league on Friday night.
