Thursday evening blast around the greenway

edited November 2013 in General
Weather forecast for Thursday evening is looking good; dark, dry and about 8 deg C. Lights are charged ready to dazzle the local dog walkers. Bike still caked in mud from the last spin. I'm ready to go....
My plan is to leave from the football fields at the Grange (Letchworth) at about 7:00pm heading anti-clockwise. Passing Harkness Roses at about 7:20pm & Willian Road at about 7:25pm should any Hitchin-ites want to join.

Pace will be about 1h 10m for the lap

Message me if you'll be out on Thursday evening

  • Another time I will join you having got a decent light at last
  • That's only 5 minutes from my house ooo...
  • Good night yesterday. Dave Hadsley and myself braved the mud. No dog walkers scared just a couple of mountain bikers at the start and a few rabbits quite literally in the headlights!

Nice pace, thanks Dave - 1:12 for the lap, so steady enough to have a conversation, where the track was wide enough.

Same plan next Thursday. 7pm from the Grange. 7:20pm Harkness Roses. 7:25pm Willian Road, Hitchin.

  • Good night indeed. There can't be much mud left on the Greenway as most of it seems to be on my bike this morning.
  • quick tip something which i've been forcing myself to do, hose your bike down as soon as you get back (so before you go through the door, this way there's no excuse)... bike is pretty much completely clean after 30 seconds
  • OK all - despite the scaremongers at the BBC weather talking snow, the weather forecast for Thursday evening is looking OK. 4 degrees and cloudy - Perfick...

So same drill as 2 weeks ago, 7pm start from the Grange football fields heading anti-clockwise. 7:20pm Harkness Roses. 7:25pm Willian Road, Hitchin.

Be there, or.... be warm at home!

  • Jamie - I would like to join you on this outing but due to train times and my lack of navigational skills around Letchworth to find your proposed starting point, would you mind starting the ride at Radwell Meadows car park on Norton Bury Lane? Its where we have started these evening rides in the past. MC are you up for this or still getting buffed in the gym? Phil A where are you?
  • guys i reckon i'll be able to join this week. just need to buy some spare tubes, which isn't difficult obviously
  • OK - Slight change of plan then, to cater for the navigationally challenged!! ;-)

    7:00pm @ Nortonbury Car Park
    7:30pm @ Harkness Roses / Cambridge Road
    7:35pm @ Willian Road, Hitchin

    See you Thursday

    J
  • I'll be out too, same as before, see you somewhere between Letchworth and Hitchin
  • Jamie - do you stick on the Greenway's entire route? Is the estimated Willian Rd 7.35pm meeting point at the intersection of Willian Rd/Queenswood Drive -shown as point 52 on the official map, link below?

    http://www.greenway.org.uk/files/Greenways_Leaflet_WEB.pdf

If so, it could be a chance to take out the Cotic X bike....trains permitting.....maybe I'll see you there, but obviously don't hang around if I'm not there!

    John
  • Thanks for the map link John. Always wondered what the official route is. Start point is 29 for those not familiar with the area.

If I am not there by 7pm don't wait for me as the trains may have delayed me.

Post ride in the Orange Tree after for those needing carbs. I will see if Alec and other mtb riders are out as well.
  • James - you're welcome. I think Alec was out on the Sunday club run, but turned back with a broken pedal.

I put the official route up as I wanted to know where I could meet up where you emerge on the William Rd at 7.35pm.....personally, I have used a short-cut that links points 51 and 57 and cuts out the road section 52-56 (Kingswood Avenue).

I live in Hitchin and usually enter/exit the Greenway at point 56...so my question is...will you be following the official route?

    John
  • I usually enter at 56 too but when we did this two weeks ago I continued around clockwise until I saw Jamie coming the other way and then turned round and did the route anti-clockwise. I met up near the golf course at about point 50. We did the entire route as shown except for a little shortcut near Knights Templar. From what I understand Jamie does mean that point where it emerges on to Kingswood at 7.35.
  • Thanks for that...I'm going to leave London early enough to get there on time...but don't hang around in the cold if the Flailing Dutchman proves to be a ghost ship and doesn't materialise!

    John
  • guys, i'm going out at 5 for two laps before the 7pm meet, if anyone wants to join?? 07595---------------300074 will have it on me

(also cheers Andrew - sadly, 29!)
  • AAAAGGGGGHHHH - RUNNING LATE MYSELF

Go ahead at 7 from Nortonbury, I'm not going to make it on time - I'll ride the other way round and try and head you off at standalone farm area!
  • Ouch...

    That's all

    Until next week

    J
  • Good fun, thanks everyone....I've a lot of fitness to make up!!!
