Lights

edited November 2013 in General
I am now at university in Swansea and have decided the front light I used at home isn't strong enough for the dark roads in the Mumbles, which are pretty much in the middle of nowhere! I wondered if anyone could recommend a good powerful light? I didn't want to spend a stupid amount (I suppose I am a student now!) so was thinking around £30/40.
Thanks, Thomas

  • Hi Thomas

I bought some off eBay for £45, claims they are 4k lumens and give 3-4hours on full beam.
So far have been impressed, unlike the (now blinded) dog walker on the Greenway!

They are sold by mighty-lights and called Trustfire 3x XML t6.

Apparently there are also some good lights on Amazon with a similar output for about £35!

  • I've got one of the generic Chinese super bright lights like this ONE. Bright enough to cycle in the pitch dark and with a good beam pattern. Waterproofing of the battery is not the best but you can bodge something up. Great for the money.

  • Thanks guys I will look into both of these!
and haha waterproofing may be an issue over here, it rains all the time!!

  • I have same as Daniel. Amazingly good for the money. It's better than my BBB lights which cost 4 x as much. Keep the battery inside a bidon, and you don't have to fiddle with the silly attachment straps or worry about waterproofness.

    Yuuup,
I have some 900 lumens Magic shine which I got from Deal extreme which are similar to Daniels, 4 yrs on and still going, they have seen mud and rain and survived Mountain mayhem and a few dusk till dawns and still going and cost me £50 at that time, though they are far from the lumens which are claimed as mine are closer to 700 lumens, but hey bang for buck a good starter light that gets you out night riding. If you have deep pockets I can highly recommend Light & Motion seca range, true light that doesn't shadow.

  • I would echo Daniel's suggestion for the cheap ebay option; they are alarmingly bright so it's as good as impossible for a conscious motorist not to see you! The only draw back is build quality (for instance one of the connections on Dad's was a bit iffy so needed some extra electrical tape round it) but with a little care you can make them last two winters even if you use them lots, which at that price is a decent deal.
