  • Sunday's ride should be a hoot
Our Cap'n's not been on the toot

So come with us and have a bash
Be like him, stay off the lash

We have a laugh, so never fear
As long as you keep off the beer

No need to moan or even whine
Just stay sober, leave the wine

    Meet Sunday morn, 9.30 ish
Saturday night, don't get er, drunk.

I was thinking of another rhyme
But now it's late, don't have the time.

So use the words set out below
Don't be shy, have a go.

    Chain.... lane.....gain....rain
    Pain...feign...wane...sane?

I need instructions to clean my chain
it must not come off while down the lane

with care and attention I will of course gain
I will not be stuck fixing it in the rain

with the pirates we laugh and try to avoid pain
unless near the sprint when you have to feign

you wait until the lead out train starts to wane
then will come GLORY, are we really all sane ?

    CP
  • I will be there and look forward to it.

I will bring a 'Buy Now' bike and cling film if I can.

    Rupert
  • Clap your hands at the Cap'n's ditty
He kept it clean and not..er, pretty?!

    Is there another pirate poet
One of the crew, they just don't know it

How about elusive Cut Throat Jake
From the Mary Celeste, not seen of late

No longer out on our Sunday runs
Usually full of banter, laughs and puns

Some say that he was quite the joker
Before his saddle felt like a poker

    Or maybe armchair loving Nick
Tony the Bullet, or crewmate, Vic?

There must be others who ride with Ashwell
Pen your efforts, don't be bashful

We'll ride on Sunday, come what may
But only the Cap'n knows the way

Where will the Pig sail tomorrow
Happy flat lands or hills of sorrow?

  • With lifted feet, hands still,
I am poised, and down the hill
    Dart, with heedful mind
The air goes by in a wind.

    Swifter and yet more swift,
Till the heart with a mighty lift
Makes the lungs laugh, the throat cry:-
‘Oh bird, see; see, bird, I fly!

‘Is this, is this your joy?
    O bird, then I, though a boy,
    For a golden moment share
your feathery life in the air!’

Say heart, is there aught like this
In a world that is full of bliss?
    ‘Tis more than skating, bound,
    Steel-shod to the level ground.

    Speed slackens now, I float
    Awhile in my airy boat;
Till, when the wheels are scarce crawl,
My feet to the treadles fall.

    Alas, that the longest hill
Must end in a vale; but still,
    Who climbs with toil, whereso’er,
    Shall find wings waiting there.

    hills !!

  • Oh no, Cap'n, I'm beseeching
We don't copy the poet, Henry Beeching

I'm not seeking thrills and spills
By slogging up those loathsome hills

Last time up the hill near Sandon
My thoughts had turned towards abandon

My shoulders heaved, lungs out of puff
The crew rode off, I'd had enough

    Eyeballs bulged, legs like lead
'Up and up', the Cap'n said

At the back the Dutchman flailed
On and on the Black Pig sailed

There be monsters in Eastern climbs
Far too much for the Dutchman's limbs

So which way is the Pig heading?
Hills south or east, both I'm dreading

If south, to prevent my ditching
I might join the Pig from Hitchin!

    FD
  • caught out it seems, my stance is prone
the captain's rhythms where not done alone

the play on birds and hills captured my heart
the captain's becoming a silly old fart

as for the hills, I think you protest too much
the man on the front was speaking dutch !

so South east we set sail, I regret avoiding hitchin
for a few steady climbs the crew are a itchin

so come on Dutchman, me old mucker
get on with it , you form is now pucker

It seems the Cap'n's excellent rhyme
    Involved a little copyright crime

    His lines appeared an inspiration
    Not subject to incrimination

But we respect the Cap'n's word
Not criticise, give him the bird

So he leads the crew south east
Upon some steady hills to feast

That's not to the Dutchman's taste
To bust a gut, to be laid waste

This year I climbed Ventoux like my heroes
2 hours of pain, at 100 kilos

Box and Leith Hill were no frights
    Compared with le Geant's heights

But 3 months off with broken arm
Did the Dutchman's form untold harm

What exact route are you taking?
I'll join from Hitchin, I'm not faking

Is it Rushden, Walkern then Benington way
Let me know, Cap'n, please do say

    I'm still under doctor's orders
Not to go mad around our borders

    Ideally a ride of recuperation
    Preferred to total obliteration

    FD
  • Save us from this tiresome rhyme
Short and sweet will suit us fine.
The cap’n rarely rhymes or scans
    The metres off piratic fans
Ride your bikes then tell us all
Even if you take a fall
    Cycling’s all about the bike
That’s what all on here would like
  • For those who don't enjoy our rhyme
Then look away, it's not a crime

The prose is all about the bike
Look again, what's not to like?

Our rhyming's fun, describes our ride
The pirates have nothing to hide

We'll be out on every Sunday
At 9.30, for a fun day

What happened to the 9 o'clocks?
    They've disappeared, confined to docks

There's plenty else upon the forum
To keep folks from the pirate quorum

We're friends to all, with open arms
We welcome riders, we've got no qualms

I'm off to bed, to get some rest
To be fresh for tomorrow's test.

  • Ahoy me hearties

the 3 B's ride made us climb
but still we arrived back spot on time

a little test it was indeed
the Captain discovered he goes to seed

infact one wig said its really 5 B.'s
a hilly ride and Back to Boyle's

so join on a Sunday at 09.30
we all laugh and ignore the shirty

alas a different silver helmet I have gained
please return mine for it is pained

see you all in 2 weeks time
on the high seas with an Ashwellian rythme

    CP
  • Many thanks to all for a good ride and also to James for both the route and coffee! Buy Now bike now all clean and back in its bag. The cling film works very well. See you all next time, Rupert.
  • Therfield, Reed, Barley, Nuthamstead, Anstey, Brent Pelham, Anstey, Wyddial, Buntingford, Mill End, Sandon, Roe Green, Slip End, Ashwell.

10 out for lumpy route, 39 miles, 15.0mph. Dry conditions, slight NW wind.

    Them's the ride stats.

    No rhyme (this time!)

    FD
  • MC , John or Rupert
one of you has my silver helmet - I have yours
    Can you return it please

    Cheers
    James

    ........steady
  • Sharing helmets now, eh. You are such a friendly bunch!

Though on 2nd thoughts, if James doesn't get his back soon, there might be a spot of plank-walking on Sunday
  • Tempting though it is, I do not dare comment......!!
