Incident in Ashwell

edited January 2014 in General
Folks,

Just a reminder about our responsibilities while wearing club kit. When riding in club kit we are very visible in the local community and any poor riding or bad behaviour reflects badly on the club and we on the committee have to deal with complaints.

So, apparently there was an altercation today between an Ashwell resident and a CCA rider. I know this because i have just had a very upset lady complaining to me in the school playground that one of "my" riders banged on the roof of her car leaving it dented and her rather distressed.
I have no idea who the rider was ( dont really want to know) and do not know the rights or wrongs of the situation but even if the driver was in the wrong, this is not how we behave while in club kit and certainly not in Ashwell.

If we want to have events in the village we need the goodwill of residents and if we want respect on the roads we have to be better than this. This sort of thing really does us no favours.
I now have to try to persuade this lady, the other lady that was with her and all the other people who she was telling the story to that we are a responsible, disciplined and respectful club.

Our standing in the village has taken a knock today.

  • Really sorry to hear this, Tim

It doesn't sound like the sort of behaviour you'd get from a member of our club. I suppose all of us are only human though and might get a bit carried away if a driver did something really frightening. Just wondering if it was definitely a CCA jersey that the lady saw? I sometimes get feedback from horse riders about minor incidents with CCA and when we talk more about what actually happened, it turns out that the riders weren't actually in CCA kit, but just assumed to be 'one of your lot'.

In any case, yes, we definitely need to work on the impression we give to locals whenever we're out
  • Tim,
Sorry to hear you've had to deal with this situation. Especially as you will have had no warning. If nothing else a salutary reminder that we all need to use the roads with proper consideration for others.

  • Well said Tim,
even if we perceive that we have been wronged by a motorist, we shouldn't ever resort to any form of physical or verbal retaliation, its just not appropriate or worth it.
plus from the motorists point of view they may not realise they have done something to upset us, and they may in fact be completely in the right,
we inevitably tend to see things from the cyclists perspective and we sometimes make mistakes.

we need to share the roads, and can do our bit by always respecting other road users, especially in local villages and towns
  • Interesting article in 'Cycling Plus' this month - Share the Road - Its a cry that often goes out to inconsiderate motorists but is it time cyclists showed some respect too?
Uncomfortable title but an interest editorial which draws a resonable conclusion
