Quietest Route to and from central london

edited February 2014 in Club runs
Hello everyone, I am going to try and ride out to ashwell at the weekend, not sure of the best route from central london, checked the website but the link ends in a dead end error message.

Anyone know the old route that used to be on the website? or an improved route?

  • Once you get north of barnet you can get on the lanes pretty quickly. one of the quickest routes can include Swain's Lane which is nice and quite steep... through the middle of highgate cemetery, right then left at the top, straight over (round to the right) the mini roundabouts and it brings you down onto the A1/A1000 junction where you can nip up through north finchley on the A1000 to barnet, then potters bar. That's the route I usually take, just a straight line north out of London. You'll know all the lanes when you get outside of Potters Bar.
  • i think Martin has a link. i have done it a few times and can assist if nothing else appears. Having said this i want a better way through to Forty Hill from Green Lanes as in the past i have ridden up the A10 to Enfield and it scares the pants off me.

    Here you go

As said above need a better way through to Enfield than the A10.
  • The best route that i have found and i think is used by most is from Finsbury Park, stay on the A105 all the way to Enfield then straight on up Baker st and then as per the above route through Cufley etc. The 105 is all single carriageway and for the most part is pretty safe.

Sorry for the slow response. Hope you made it all good on the weekend.

Here's the most direct route, honed over the years. Safe-ish in as much as by sticking to Green Lanes there's little turning off the main roads until Forty Hill. Razz past Phil Liggett's house. And the spot where the first ever Zeppelin was shot down. Commuting and history in a oner.

Note the one-way kinks in Enfield and Kings Cross.

Around Wood Green to Manor House is quite nasty.

We used to bomb down the A10 like the trench in Star Wars. Orribl.

I'll join you Josh for a commute. Not sure if I'd be too slow for you though. Saying that, average speed in the centre is low.
  • Ah so thats where i kept going wrong - turning right at Turnpike Lane. Simples then just keep going on Green Lanes. Nice one.
