CCA Majorcan Training Camp 2014
This year we headed to Derbyshire with the Junior Squad.
We traveled to stay at Ilam Hall YHA (near Ashbourne) on Thursday night. Friday gave us the change to taste the local hills. We followed Leek CCs Legbreaker route, which passes through the village. This is either steep up or steep down. We deviated from the route somewhat at Congleton to take in Mow Cop. For those who have not ridden this is it is brazen hussy of a hill, hard to start with but with a rooflike ramp near the top. The problem is you can see what is coming. Tough. Later on Theo suffered a severe front wheel blow out at speed and did well to control his bike. The rim landing on the road has sadly rendered it rubbish. Ask Phil about the 20% A road coming out of Froghall!
Our original plans for Saturday were re-arranged into something we could actually manage. The severity of the climbs was toned down a bit as we were all on sore legs. A great days riding, but another rim was ruined by the roads, this time a pot hole.
On Sunday we were joined by CCAs good friend James Dobbin. He knows the area well from his childhood and he lead us on a storming ride. This included Rowley Bar, which was used for the 1997 National Hill Climb championships; I understand why.
So a tough but very satisfying weekend. We can all recommend this youth hostel as being very good and the cycling is simply superb. Thanks to all who helped, especially our tireless coach Mark.
