I've got house insurance cover for mine....came in handy 2 yrs ago when a gang of local bike thieves stole my Brian Rourke (made by Brian himself 20 yrs ago) and Spesh Stumpjumper. Paid up for new bikes no quibbles.
I also have BC Ride membership -£32 pa (needed for many sportives) gives up to £10m liability insurance, free legal support and advice.
I've just been looking into this as it happens (just treated myself to a new MTB, yay!) - after some research I've concluded that if you want dedicated bike insurance then British Cycling is a good option, it's no cheaper anywhere else and you get the benefit of it being backed by a large organisation. And yes recommend BC membership anyway as John says for the 3rd party cover.
However, whilst dedicated insurance may give you the best cover, it's not cheap at all, so I'm going to go the house contents route...but what you have to be careful of here is that most household policies will have a limit of £1000 for bikes, and if your bike is worth a lot more than that they might not pay up at all as they can regard it as under-insured.
John Lewis does seem to offer cover for bikes over £1000 though, so we're probably going to change to them.
Direct Line insure our house...I specified the bikes as part of the valuable contents....as I say, they coughed up nearly £5k for the 2 stolen bikes, no quibbles.
Thanks for the advice.....I have the bikes on the home insurance but on renewal found that it only covers the bikes when they are at home for instances such as Johns. I was able to specify values so no arguments etc if the worse happens but the cover doesn't extend to any eventuality outside the home such as being stolen or involved in an accident.
