Welwyn Youth Omnium

edited May 2014 in Youth
Welwyn Youth Omnium takes place on Saturday 17th May. I suggest as many of our youth riders enter as possible.

https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/101613/Welwyn-Youth-Omnium#entry

This is one of the few opportunities in the year for our youth riders to ride a full range of track races (e.g. points race, time trial, scratch, sprint, elimination race) rather than just handicaps at the track league. Unless recent entrants aren't appearing on the website yet, we only have one rider entered from the entire club - Sophie L in the U12s.

Anyone who has ridden the Lee Valley Velo Park or Welwyn track cluster sessions (or Welwyn track league last year) already has the track skills required. It's great experience for a young rider.

Closing date is tomorrow, and there are no entries on the day, so if you've been thinking about entering now is the time to hit the button.

Any queries, just whisper or email me.

4 youth riders represented CC Ashwell on Saturday at Welwyn Youth Omnium. An event which saw 120+ youth riders in all categories from U8/10s up to U16 from clubs across the South East region. It was a scorching day, with riders often having to resort to Formula 1 style pre-race tactics – see photo below. CC Ashwell were definitely one of the smaller clubs, with clubs such as Welwyn, VC Londres, Preston Park (Brighton) and Cycling Club Hackney, often fielding several riders in each of the age categories. Though saying that, CC Ashwell were determined not to be intimated, and all the CCA youth riders did their club proud!

    Welwyn Omnium 2014

    Those taking part were:
    - Gareth Lewis – U14 boys
    - Holly Proctor – U14 girls
    - Adam Lightfoot – U12 boys
    - Sophie Lewis – U12 girls

The race took the format of:
    - 1 lap time trial of the 500m track (2 laps for U14s)
    - Elimination race – last rider (or often 2 riders) are removed each lap – until a battle for the line takes place
    - Scratch – a simple first across race
    - Sprint – 1 lap sprint (between groups of 4 riders)
    - Points – sprint every other lap with points being awarded to the first 4 positions, ending in a big sprint for the line

I’m sure either Sophie, Gareth or Holly (or their one of their parents) will update with further details & photos (Gareth’s mum was seen taking some snaps?)… Adam was really chuffed with his result, I think only missing out on 4th by a point or 2. I think Sophie was really unlucky to miss out on 3rd overall in the last race. …Overall I was really impressed by the skill and track discipline all our riders displayed, I think all those track cluster sessions they’ve have attended over previous months gave them the confidence when riding in big bunches. Well done all!

  • well done Gareth, Holly, Adam and Sophie. Sounds like it was a fantastic day, and you all rode really well.
  • Well done all of you - a great example to all of our youth riders. Let's review how the event went and plan what would help make the next one even better.

    Speaking of which:-

The second event in the series is VC Londres Youth Omnium on 01/06/14. Entries close soon.

The third and final event is the Preston Park Youth Omnium on 14//06/14.

Don't forget that the top 5 finishers overall in each category qualify for the National Final on 13/07/14 at our "home ground", Welwyn.

  • All Ashwell riders had great time and were very competetive against strong opposition. Holly was chuffed to get 8th in her first event of this size (before event her aim was to not finish last!!). The competition in races was very close and just a small swing in points moves you up or down leaderboard. All Ashwell riders were fantastic. Holly can't wait for next event.
  • Well done all thats superb and great to see Holly in the top 10!
