Isle of Man Cycling Festival Results & Report
Over the bank holiday weekend 2 of our junior and youth team members took part in the Isle of Man Youth Cycling Festival. This is part of the youth national circuit series and was a chance for valuable national BC points. Cameron Woolsey took part in the junior events and Samuel Quiggin in the category E (under 8) youth events.
Over 350 riders took part in the event which started on Friday 2nd May with a 1.3km prologue time trial, followed by road racing stages for the juniors on Saturday and Sunday and a road race and circuit races for the youth categories. Racing was of a very high standard with a good contingent of riders from across the UK travelling to the Island.
On a sunny but cold Friday evening in the prologue on a straight out a back course on the seafront promenade of Douglas Cameron returned a time of 1:47 @ 0:09s in 46th place amongst the juniors, Samuel completed the course in 2:31 @ 0:02s in 3rd place amongst the category E's
On Saturday morning Stage 2 took the juniors for 102km around 11 laps of a hilly 9km course on the west of the island. Cameron finished in 43rd place @ 9:13.
In the afternoon the youth category riders completed circuits on a hilly course in the centre of the island. The E category riders completing half a lap of the course (which meant a 1.5 mile downhill and a 1km climb to the finish ending with a 20% section!) Samuel finished in 4th place on a decidedly belgian atmosphere at the top of the climb @ 0:27s behind the leader Finlay Tarling from West Wales CC and 2 local riders.
On Sunday the event moved to the north of the island with the juniors completing a 92km around 6 laps of a 16km circuit. Cameron finished in 48th place @ 0:32s.
The youth riders completed circuits of the Ramsey promenade in a stiff breeze. There was some confusion at the start of the D & E race as the riders were split by age and then gridded but then all started together across categories - This put Samuel in a poor position as he had to fight his way past the back markers category D riders and meant the race was fragmented from the off. (one for BC to think about improving in future races!) After the dash around 3 laps Samuel was fighting it out for 3rd and 4th place with James Brown (Palmer Park Velo) losing out by 2 seconds to achieve 4th place.
The general classification for the event was decided on time and with bonuses taken into account Cameron placed 43rd in the juniors @ 9:38 and Samuel placed 3rd in the under 8's @1:31.
Unfortunately I didn't get to see much of the junior event - Cameron - do you have any details to add to the junior races?
There are hundreds of photo's of the riders on the event facebook page - see link below:
