National Youth Circuit series round 7
Joseph raced in the latest round of the national Youth Circuit series in Wiltshire on Sunday. The race was held at Castle Combe race track with the Under 10s doing 4 laps of the huge 3km circuit.
I can't really report much on the race as the viewing for parents was dreadful with only about 20% of the track visible from the start/finish line. Joseph said that the race split into two at one of the chicanes when a lead rider attacked. Fortunately Joseph was following the right wheel and managed to get into the front group. Despite a few flurries of activity around the primes this group stayed intact until the final lap when a series of attacks split it up. Joseph said he helped chase down one attack but some of the other riders were too busy looking at each other to chase down the final and ultimately successful attack. Joseph held on in the bunch to finish 9th in the tough uphill sprint.
Interestingly, the aforementioned winning attack was by a girl rider. This is the first time I've seen a girl rider win one of these big national races in a combined race. Joseph said the boys may have let her go not thinking she would be able to hold on. Obviously they had not seen her dad race before, very well done to Zoe Backstedt, daughter of Paris Roubaix winner, Magnus Backstedt.
