Lincolnshire Cross league Round 2 - Spalding

Three (well, two and a half) of us went up to Spalding last Sunday to explore the goings on at the Ellmore Cyclocross League. The league is aptly named, as 6 of the top ten finishers in the Seniors race all race on the Ellmore Factory Team.

The CCA contingent was Joseph and David Hadsley (David is the half as he rides with the HCTB squad) and John Polak.

This was a well organized event, run on grassy school grounds, not disimilar to our own venue at Baldock. Lincolnshire race day structure has a real old school feel to it, as they only have three races, one for all the under 12s racing together, the Youth race, and the Seniors race, which again combines all the categories in a single mass start.

Not being league regulars we were all ungridded, which meant starting from the back and seeing how far up the field we could make our way. A different sort of challenge.

Joseph is an under 10 rider, and finished in 12th place overall, despite being at the back of the bunch at the start. LCXL don't release U10 results so we can only speculate how many U10s were ahead of him, but there certainly weren't many.

The seniors race was hot, fast and busy with a field of nearly 100 sharing a relatively short circuit, meaning lots of lapping taking place. David finished in 19th and John in 7th in the Vets category.

Good outing, and very viable alternative to Eastern and Central Leagues for those weeks when you can't make their fixtures work for you, or like last Sunday there is a cancellation.

  • Thanks for writing the report. We both enjoyed our day out in the fens and I was impressed with the race organisation. They kept it nice and simple and there was minimal waiting around. Really pleased with my result too.
  • Good results you 3 and thanks for the write up and info. ....Nice to know about other options
  • Well done you 3. Sounds a bit like a race we did the North Wales league last year. No gridding just a huge line of riders charging towards a funnel before a sharp right hand bend. Good to try somewhere else though.
