London to Barcelona, advice needed

The son of a friend of a friend is planning to ride London to Barcelona next summer to raise money for the cancer charity that has helped him while he has been ill.
If anyone has done a similar route, or has any route recommendations, or general tips or advice they could pass on it would be greatly appreciated.
