'Phsssssstttt!'… The CCA Winter Riding On-The-Road Puncture Repair Masterclass
CCA monthly pub night, Three Tuns backroom, Ashwell 9pm

For the next monthly pub night, Richard M has kindly offered to step up to the plate and present a masterclass on winter riding puncture repair.

For all riders, it's liable to be interesting, useful, perhaps controversial and will generate a good bit of debate. We'll try and keep the presentation and Q&A under 20 mins. Yeh, right...

We'll do it at 9pm, though remember the evening generally gets going from 8pm.

There'll be a bonus track to the session... Can someone come forward with their notorious difficult to remove tyre/wheel combo? Richard is going to show you that even the toughest bit of removal and repair is no problem - if you do it right. I'm hoping he uses his teeth, or simply shouts at the tyre to come off. Richard's only known weakness is a Gatorskin on a Campag wheel. It's like kryptonite to him.

There'll be a masterclass, talk, presentation or somesuch every month now. Want to do something? Let me know. All the more reason to bob along to a club night and share in the banter. See you there.

  • well i guess i really should book a front row seat for that one! Having enjoyed practically puncture free riding for years, since the 2014 Ride of the Cornfields, between Henry and I we have experienced THIRTEEN punctures!!! definitely unlucky for some.. and thats accross four bikes (cross & road) and multiple tyres??!!
  • Great idea! Thanks Richard

I've got a wheel I cant get the tyre off. Richard, it's a track wheel you replaced my clincher/Tufo/Tub with a steel rim clincher tyre and tube..The one Rosanna was using. I'll try to make it down, but if not I'll get it to you some other time :-) Hope the session goes well.
  • OK, 'masterclass' is probably a bit strong and the discussion I had with Martin about an exchange of views over a pint seems to have become a bit more.

However if you would like to follow the points under discussion please bring a clean wheel, tyre, tube and two tyre levers and we can all have a go.

    See you on the 4th
  • If we called it 'Chatclass' people might not turn up... It's Marketing ;-)

Anyway. I'm looking forward to it, and know I'll come away enlightened.

Next masterclass after this one?? I know people would love to know more about Cyclocross. Might be good in December coming after the World Cup in MK.
  • A reminder: November's club night is this Tuesday, 4th Nov.

People will appear from around 8pm I guess, and the Puncture Masterclass is on at 9pm.

Having ran through it with Richard, I'm going to go as far to say you will definitely learn something new by seeing this demonstration. I look forward to a little bit of heated debate on the minutiae like tyre lever choice. Three Tuns, Ashwell, backroom.

PS. Is anyone going who is a cyclocrosser? We might have a newbie turning up who has a few questions.

PPS. If anyone wants to talk about Tour of Flanders sportive - I'll be around. You can register now and I'm booked in.

PPPS. Does anyone want to jump in and do a masterclass or presentation for the next club night [Tues 2nd Dec]? Let me know.

  • Martin, i am aiming to be there and can answer any CX q's but might be a bit late, I've got to go to a football club meeting to get my CRB renewed thanks to the hopelessly un joined up system. Yawn.
  • I would have thought next months Masterclass would be track stands, Martin?

    Brilliant idea Matt.

December club night, Tues 2nd Dec. From 8pm

CCA Bike Crawl Challenge - in Three Tuns car park, 9pm start [tbc - I'll have a word with Tim/Chris landlord at the pub night tomorrow]. We could do a few elimination rounds and then a final - from one side to the pub garden picket fence. I'll get a piece of chalk to mark it out. And a suitable prize.

Get inspired with that link to the Marymoor Crawl that Stef sent a couple of weeks back.

    Cheers!
  • Can anyone pick up the big box of club kit stock and bring it over for Tuesday's club night? Kit can't make it.

If you can help - get in touch - thanks

  • I'll be bringing some 2nd hand kit down tonight that I've shrunk out of for anybody that's looking for medium sized stuff... I've also got a few other bits and bobs that need to go too.

Update on kit: it'll be at the club night from about 8.30pm tonight. Orders have come thru and Kit has kindly bagged and tagged them. See other thread for details.

A potential favour to ask: I'll gladly step in as interim kit coordinator for the evening, but there's a chance I won't be there at 8.30pm when the kit turns up. Could I ask anyone already there by then to help unload it when it arrives and watch over it til I get there?

Also, it might be good if someone with a car can take the stuff away after til it's picked up by Kit a few days later.

Will is bringing the stuff over - cheers Will. Can people help him carry it in as he's a bit C3-P0 after having his collarbone repaired.

See you later. Bring yer difficult wheel/tyre combo. Clean if poss.

Well done Group Marmotte getting in today. I might do a "10 Tips On How Not To Ride The Marmotte" presentation at December's club night, Tues 2nd Dec.
  • Will I'm iinterested in your medium size stuff.

I'll be bringing some xl stuff in case anyone is interested in that. I've shrunk out of them.
  • null

Great stuff. 16 out at club nite. All inner tubes sold.

December?? Bike crawl AND pub quiz.
  • I don't suppose there is a video of the Masterclass?. Wanted to come but last minute emergency
  • It was good. New tyres are fitted and my winter bike is ready

Mr Maynard might run another one if we ask nicely ... or on-the-road indexing might be a good topic for the next one?
