CCA club pub night, Tues 6th Jan 2015, 8pm

edited December 2014 in General
Tuesday eve, 6th Jan 2015, 8pm @ Three Tuns

The monthly club pub night will feature...

• Maynard Masterclass... On-the-road chain repair. That'll be a cracker.

• The Puncture Repair Race Challenge. Who can knock Richard M off his leaderboard perch? It'll be tough with them statutory Schwalbe tyre levers!

• 'Ride of the Three Cafes' - the new CC Ashwell Spring Classic route and details revealed - for those unable to make the preview at the Rapha Cafe during this Friday's London-Baldock social.

• Club kit for sale

• There might be another quiz from the Wattsmeister.

The fun starts from around 8pm. It was nice to see a couple of new members there last month. All welcome. Three Tuns back room.

Cheers

  • I'm going to throw this in as a possible...?

    • 'Rollers' - av a go!

A chance to try it out and sell in the Monday sessions? And maybe Chappers can do his rollers inner tube trick??
  • Richard's time stands at a mighty 5.01, followed by Martin at 6.10, then John Meadows at 11.23. A pound in the charity pot, and you, too, could aim for greatness.... (despite those pesky levers). I still have copies of the current quiz if anyone wants a go on the night, if anyone took one away last week, bring them back in January, and I'll see if I can remember the answers.
Is there going to be a second running of the bike race?

Bringing back to the top - and for a reason!
Come along on to the club night for a chance to discuss CC Ashwells potential role in a new cycle racing series in 2015....

An opportunity has been presented to CC Ashwell to support one of a new series of road racing events in Hertfordshire in the summer of 2015. From the info that has been shared with us this seems ike a great opportunity with lots of support from across key parties such as the British Cycling, County Council, Police and commercial sponsors. Our experience of organising and supporting race and go ride events could really bring something to the event. I'm really keen to share as much as I can but unfortunately we have been asked to keep the specifics of the events, dates, locations etc confidential at this stage. We will be able to reveal a lot more detail at the club night on 6th Jan.

As yet we haven't formalised any role for the club in the event. We have held this off until there was a chance to canvass opinion and support from the broader club membership. As with all things in life our involvement wouldn't be for "free" and I am in the process of fact finding from the various parties involved so we can bring a full picture of the opportunity and commitments required from us if we support the event.

So come along to the club night for the Grand Reveal and your chance to commit your support or at least share your opinions and ideas (which I'm sure knowing a lot of you will be abundant and enthusiastically imparted! ;-)

    Happy Christmas

Seeing as this club night will have a bit of racing talk, are any racers up for a spin on the night, 6-8? Thinking chaingang circuit, riding out from Ashwell. Weather dependent, not in the rain or with ice.
Full lights front and rear, obviously.
  • Hopefully i will be able to make this.

Pearce, i would be up for a smash it session but dont think the weather is going to be kind :-(
  • Hi all - members old and new, and anyone thinking of joining. Tomorrow - Tues eve - is the first monthly Club night of 2015. I hope you can make it.

Scroll back up this thread to read all about what will be covered in this very informal gathering at There Tuns' backroom, not least the amazing new opportunity for the Club to become involved in a new annual road racing series and cycling event.

Lots more besides. Maynard Masterclass might see a bottom bracket replacement demonstration as well as chain repair tips. Fingers crossed: as it's my bottom bracket that needs replacing.

The fun starts from about 8pm. Se you Tuesday.
  • Will definitely be there, looking forward to it! :-)
  • Alas, there will be no Maynard Masterclass tomorrow. We will try instead for February's club night.

Unless someone else wants to step in with their chain or bottom bracket hints and tips..?

There's plenty else to talk about though. See you tomoz.
  • As with most everything in life, there's a tutorial on YouTube, I've had to do it twice myself whilst out on the trails; alas, Tuesday's nights, I can never manage.
  • Can anyone with outstanding trophies please bring them tonight. I am hoping to be there but if i don't make it please leave with Stef or Mark W

    Ta.

Great to see 30 or so members out. Hearing about the Tour Of Hertfordshire and other things. Great to witness the leaderboard change twice on t'tyre change challenge. 3m 11s first by Vince. Then 2m 42s by Tim D. Unbeatable????

  • What has to be achieved during the puncture repair challenge - is it just changing the tube and pumping it up ready to ride?
  • getting serious now methinks. You are going to need another award for this challenge Tim/Martin :-)
  • Tyre deflation, complete removal of inner tube (using the challenge tyre levers), re-fitting of tyre and pumping up to 70psi (with the challenge mini-pump)

2m 42 is a pretty impressive time - not sure anybody will get close to it !
  • Sounds very fast to me.

I remember pro-mechanics doing this during the Milk Race/Tour of Britain when clincher tyres started to be a race alternative to tubulars. I suspect you may be surprised at just how fast they were at their version of the competition, but they didn't have slower mini pumps then and there was less of a tyre and rim combination to combat.
  • do you have to use a tyre lever?

    These levers...

    This mini pump...

    null

    This tyre/wheel...

Or at least, it feels like this tyre/wheel when everyone is staring, tutting and wincing...

You don't have to use the levers. But the challenge tyre is distinctly oldskool and quite a brute. I think it would give even Brother Lee Love from the Kenny Everett Show a bit of a problem. We'd love to see you have a go Geoff, next time you're down. Next pub nite... Tues 3rd Feb.

  • If it's anything like the one Richard fitted on my track wheel for Rosanna then I understand. Can't even get this one off WITH levers. If I'm around I will bring for Richard to show me how. Up for a go if down Martin.
  • Ha, yes it did feel like pumping up a monster truck tyre. I was exhausted! Theres plenty of room for improvement there though. I started with the tyre levers the wrong way round for a start!
