  • 23 club members racing !!!!! Stunning everyone and great results.....5 podiums and good placings. What a wonderful Christmas present for the club.
Have a happy new year everyone.
  • A few of us were held up by the start straight crash and had to fight our way back. So particularly well done to Vam who pulled up from last. Pete was flying round the corners as usual, he didn''t seem to notice the mud - he must have a good coach! The rider who went down ended up being taken to hospital as he was worried about his back.

Noah and Travis were both recovering or suffering from colds so I'm sure they'll be back near the front next time. Adam was not far behind them and had a storming race.

Archie B had to pull out of the Under 10's after crashing but just has a sore knee. Sallie is intending to ride on Thursday so good luck to her in her first race.

We won't be back for Welwyn on Saturday so will probably head to the London League event at Bethlem Hospital which is always a good course.

The course used for the U10 and U12 races was very good, with enough technical features to give the riders a challenge without making it too difficult for the youngest riders or novices. There were relatively few overtaking opportunities once riders had left the start and finish sections though, which gave the more experienced riders something to consider when planning their race.

In fact the course was almost ideal for CCA's U12s who have been training at Baldock each week, as several of the features were very similar to those used in our own Knights Templar sessions.

In the U10s Mark L rode a strong race to finish second behind his season-long rival from Colchester Rovers. The two riders are now equal on points with two rounds of the League remaining. Sam Q was within a minute of the winner's time, and Evan F finished in the top half of the field too. Joseph H had an accident during the race, I think, from which he couldn't recover but he finished the race nonetheless. However, Joseph is now assured of third place in the overall U10 Eastern League.

The U12s event was probably one of the best of the series. All the front-row riders knew that it was important to get to the single-file, adverse-camber section among the first few riders or risk being held up and losing a lot of time. Freddie C and James F had fast starts and it was James who led the field into the first technical section, with all of the other CCA riders close behind. A break of three riders formed including James and two strong riders from Welwyn and East London Velo. Those three riders attacked each other throughout the race but none of them could get away from the other two. It came down to a sprint for the line in which James was pushed down to third place. Freddie, Archie F and Sam D all rode very strongly so that CCA dominated the U12 event once again. Archie did well despite little sleep the night before, and Sam continued to show that he has improved his skill and fitness a lot during the season. James lies in third place overall in the league but still has a slim chance of jumping up to second.

In the women's event, Jackie had an excellent race to finish third and did her overall league standings no harm by taking second-place league points (because the winner is not league-registered). She lies in second place overall in the league and is the leading veteran woman. Anna had a much better race than she expected after being unable to ride more than one or two hours per week since the summer. Although she lost time to stronger rivals on the open, flat sections she regained it by riding the technical features quickly and riding where several others dismounted. Stevie hasn't had the opportunity to train or race much either, but her experience showed as she rode the tricky course confidently.

Finally, even with two second-place finishers and one third-place finisher at Snetterton CC Ashwell was pushed down to fourth in the combined team score. The club is now in third place behind Welwyn Wheelers and Iceni Velo but ahead of Colchester Rovers, and it's likely to stay that way until the end of the season.
