CX Wheel and Tyre Advice

edited September 2015 in General
Have a Kinesis Pro6 which I run as my Winter steed.

Looking to do a few CX races and want to get a set of good/high quality clincher wheels (running discs) and a set of CX tyres that are a good all-round compromise for dry/wet conditions.

Really keen to get some advice from the CX experts in the club.

Before the inevitable tubs v clinchers debate starts I'll jump straight in with Challenge open tubulars, Grifos are a good for all conditions and although I've never tried them Baby Limus are meant as an all rounder. I'm a big fan of them and with latex tubes are a good compromise if you don't want to run tubs. I've got four sets of Challenge tyres and can't fault them.

Can't comment on disc wheels as I use rim brakes.

Edit : I should say Grifos might not be good for really muddy conditions but if you only want one set then are a good choice. Otherwise just use a mud tyre like a Limus all year round with the downside of increased rolling resistance when it's dry and you could be on a faster tyre.
  • Just pedal the Bike Princesses ;-) and stop waffling Hadsley, we don't go fast enough to worry about brakes and tyre choice!
  • Not sure I agree with you Shelton about tyres. I know when I went over to tubs it felt much quicker. Maybe that was just in my head but even that put me at an advantage... Maybe....

As for disc wheels Noah has these and they are the best non tubular set in the household by a long way

  • Jeremy I think Mark Wyer may have good advise on tyres. I only run narrow schwable cross tyres - cannot remember how narrow - 32mm or is it 30s. they are great for dry plus muddy but most ride a less nobbly grass tyre.
Low pressure is the trick apparently. stops wheel spin.
not a specialist. Don't ask Iain Foulkes (read last race thread).
Suggest you turn up to the Wed evening cross sessions if they are doing them for adults this year. Really helps to learn some simple techniques or you will spend your first few races falling off at the hurdles. starting cross is a great adventure.
  • The Crosslight wheels £239 on ProBikeKit atm. Discount codes are easy to find. I fancy a set for my Pinnacle (argh £££££££££££).

I've been running the Michelin Mud 2 clinchers and have found they roll well on roads and dry trails, despite the name. I think they're a good all-round bet, but I wouldn't claim to be an expert!

Next thing I need to do is actually have a go at racing, rather than thinking about it. What could possibly go wrong?!
  • Yeah, no need to over think this just get some intermediates, Grifos or Vittoria XG, something like that and crack on!
  • Thanks for the advice.

    Grifos ordered on Wiggle.
  • Ha Ha Vincent - my advice (and it's not worth much) is to treat yourself to a nice pair of veloflex slicks and take up road racing. Cyclocross...crazy sport for men with beards and a glue obsession! ;-)
    I.
  • definitely tubeLESS. none of this tub / tube nonsense; what is this 2010?
