Horses and cyclists

edited September 2015 in General
Further to my other post on club runs today, this is (from the horses mouth) what the 2 riders who complained request of us as cyclists when we meet horses on the road. This is a good reminder of our responsibilities. As I understand it the group they encountered today were spread across the road which is not acceptable. We should always ride 2 abreast neatly. They were also very noisy and didn't attract the attention of the horse riders before passing, also not acceptable. To stress, I don't think these were CCA rides, so this is not a complaint from me, just a reminder of how to behave.

"Could you please ask your members to announce at a safe distance that they are behind any horse and wishing to pass, and when in a large number at least pass as quietly as possible. "

"Please, please, please could you pass on to your members a request for consideration to be shown to horse riders encountered during your rides, especially when large numbers are involved ? As horse riders, we cannot hear cyclists behind us although our horses can and are often worried by them. If we know, we can and will endeavour to let the cyclists pass where possible."

  • Always have announced presence, but clearly the noisy riders were audible. Always best to keep pedalling as the horses don't like the sound of freewheel clicking. Like I said in other thread it's often a nervous rider who shouldn't really be riding on the road.
