Saturday 3rd October 9.30 club run - end of season spin to Maglia Rosso Cafe?

edited September 2015 in Club runs
Long range forecast is looking good for Saturday, so how about we do an 'end of season classic' and have a spin to the Maglia Rossa cafe near Bury St Edmunds??

Just roughly mapped it out and it's 54 miles to the cafe which is then about 6 miles from Bury St Edmunds train station. From Bury it's a train back to Cambridge/Ashwell.

So, who's up for some coffee and cake in Suffolk? As a bonus we might even be able to squeeze in the highest point of the county to give us 6 peaks for the year :)

  • Sounds good, I'm not sure about the other Royston boys, but may try and meet when you go through Therfield - any idea what time you anticipate going through there?
  • Yep I'm up for that, as Alan says will make sense for us to meet you en route somewhere.
  • This sounds like a bit of me.
    Should see you there
  • Excellent, Maglia Rosso it is tomorrow then

I'll check through the route later just to make sure mapmyride hasn't chosen some random bridalways, streams or stately home driveways & can a couple of people upload it to their garmin to give me a hand with navigation.

Meeting en route for those in Royston sounds a good plan. How about just before 10 by the fox and duck in Therfield (on the green) ?
  • This sounds like an excellent trip out, but due to the crazy hill climb on Sunday Dave and I are looking to do a shorter ride. So...we're going for the complicated option so we don't miss out on Saturday's jolly in the sunshine.

We will aim to meet you just after Steeple Bumpstead, where the B1054 joins the A1017. On Google streetview there is a BRIGHT pink Chinese restaurant. I think you'll be coming past there 11.20-11.30ish. This should be about 20 miles to Maglia Rosso, where after coffee we will ride back to wherever we managed to leave the car.

Please post if the route changes!
  • Don't worry you'll be safe with the route in my new Garmin :-)

I think last weeks test confirms this.....
  • 10am at the pub in Therfield sounds fine, see you there.
  • OK, here is the slightly corrected route. I've removed a cycle cross section to a barn at Boyton end and a pointless out and back near hempsted. Can't get it to remove the tiny detour near Sewards end which goes up and down the driveway of Pounce Hall. Clearly the programmer for mapmyride is obsessed by stately homes.

So here is the link to the updated version

So, we will meet the Royston crowd at Therfield and Jenny/Dave somewhere somewhere near a bright pink chinese restaurant !

Should be a cracking ride ! See you in the morning :)

Ah the mission to Maglia Rosso. Sounds like another CCA adventure in the making

The burning question is whether the coffee's better in Bicycletta (Saffron Walden) than Maglia Rosso... but then again, if you get the train from Bury, it won't matter anyway. Have fun
  • Looking forward to it - should be a great day. I have just looked up train times and there is only 1 train an hour from Bury St Edmonds to Cambridge - they are at X.57 and so we might want to make sure we are aiming for a particular train rather than hanging around Bury for an hour........

11 of us out yesterday for a voyage into the deepest depths of Suffolk! Bit of a chilly foggy start, but eventually the sun broke through & in places it could have almost been summer.

Great route out through Safron Walden and onto Radwinter and then Steeple Bumstead where we had a bit of a hunt for Dave and Jenny as the pink chineese had turned into a blue pub ! After Steeple we were definately in the back of beyond, with miles of amazing rolling country lanes with barely a car in sight. Also we found out that we were all wrong about Suffolk being a flat county as we seemed to be going continually uphill ! So much uphill in fact that we reached the highest point of the county in Rede, so that is now 6 counties/6 peaks for this year. Nathan also had the crazy notion that as the 5 counties/5 peaks wasn't quite mad enough next year we should do a 6 peaks, 6 counties challenge. Might need some convincing to do that one.....

From Rede it was more of the same superb rolling countryside until we came down the hill and to the Maglia Rossa cafe. Great destination and some pretty good cakes/bacon sarnies. Oh and a Derosa bike shop for Adam ;) After that it was a mere 5 miles to Bury and back on the slow and rather infrequent train to Cambridge.

Thanks all for the great company yesterday, really enjoy the route and the banter. Always good to explore some bits of the country we have never seen before. Also a huge thanks to Emma for skilfully navigating us round the unsigned lanes. Think we ended up 65 @ 16, and amazingly from 'flat' Suffolk 3200ft of climbing !
  • Thanks all for a great trip. I agree that I never realised Suffolk was so hilly, thanks David for the maps, it was much flatter going back by the main road. And that bakewell slice was fairly epic. Where's next?...
