National Cyclo-Cross Championships - Shrewsbury
We had a fantastic 6 riders competing in the National Cyclo-Cross Championships at Shrewsbury today.
As everywhere at the moment the ground was waterlogged and inevitably very muddy and slippery. Tough going!
First race was the Vet women with Jackie Field taking part. She hurt her back only two weeks ago so it was touch and go that she would even make the start line. As usual she was stronger towards the end of the race, picking up places on the last lap. She came in 9th overall and just missed out on a medal being 4th Vet 50+ by only 8 seconds. It was a fantastic performance considering the problems she had in the lead up to the race.
In the Youth Under 14 girls race, Harley Pell had a storming start and led the race away. Sophie Lewis also had a brilliant start going from the third row to the front of the race in the course of the starting straight. Although Harley settled down into the top 10 she then struggled a bit with the running due to a knee problem she has picked up recently. Sophie had a flying last lap and picked up a couple of places and finished 8th. Harley faded a bit and ended up in 10th. Very creditable results for both girls.
Noah rode in the extremely competitive Under 16 boys race and came in a very good 36th. He was second best rider from the Eastern Region.
Felix Field and Adam Lightfoot were riding their first ever National Championships in the Under 14 boys. Felix looked at home in the muddy conditions, There was one tough muddy flat section that even the top Under 16's were not riding but on his last lap he found the right line and kept ploughing on. He ended up in 31st place. Adam started just outside the top 10 but just kept getting stronger. He came home in an outstanding 6th place just one second off 5th.
Congratulations all for a great effort and testament to all the hard work you have put in during training and racing this season. Brilliant work by the pit crews and thanks to Daniel for lending kit and being on hand as emergency mechanic. Thanks to all the CCA riders who have pushed them in training, encouraged them at races and made it one big team effort.
Hopefully they can post their stories up and possibly some photos from the Fields.
