Saturday 9th April 9.30am club ride - Paris-Roubaix stylie

edited April 2016 in General
Let's give this gritty classic a whirl in a homage to P-R (without the cobblestones, just awful potholed Hertfordshire roads to replicate the experience !)

Ashwell-Barkway-Lincoln Hill-Puckeridge-Westmill-Buntingford-Sandon-Ashwell

Might also do a 'Trench of Arrenburg' deviation from Buntingford to Cromer via Throcking......

High probability of getting lost on the other side of Puckeridge, so maps/GPS devices at the ready :)

  • Never fear - I will be there to help navigate the Puckeridge bit. We can add an extra loop round Haultwick for the truly PR experience, I'm not sure there's any actual road left at all. C'mon, you know Adam would want us to! Sounds like the winter bike will be back out tomorrow though :(
  • Surely you mean Spring Bike!
  • Heavy tyres and mudguards...sounds like winter to me!

    Will this be me?

    Or will this be me?

Good luck tomorrow Adam. We were over at Carrefour de L'Arbre yesterday to watch the teams recceing the course. Looking dry for now. Went for a little ride over the cobbles and forgot just how brutal they are on the body and bike.
  • Adam, with all that training you've done...................
  • Is that the Haultwick road that is a giant tree lined mudslide ! Maybe we will leave that to Adam when he returns.....

Mind you, from his pictures he going to turn into the invisible man ;)
  • Good luck on the cobblesh Adam
    Or rather g-g-g-g-o-o-o-o-o-o-d-d-d-d-d l-l-l-l-u-u-u-u-c-c-c-c-k-k-k-k-k
  • Good luck Adam - hope you got those car sponges secure on the handlebars!

I pretty sure that top pic will be you and look out for Trek as they may want to poach you from CCA to replace Spartacus ........of course we won't let them :-)
  • The Haultwick Road is looking more civilised than many now due to some resurfacing.

David, you may be aware you can ride from Throcking to Rushden via a paved By-way/footpath through a farm. Usually just one gate to open. We used it on the Sunday club run a couple of weeks ago much to everyone's amusement as I forgot how to access it at first.

I am tempted to meet you at some point in the morning but it's been a long day in Surrey today so might opt for a lie in!

    Mark.
  • Good Luck Adam - show Wiggins how he should have done it!
#Pulls duvet over head and goes back to sleep#
  • Sorry I bailed. After my 1st puncture I realised that my rear tyre was in bad shape (rather embarrassingly!)
Thanks Tim for the gas and DaveN for the extra tube.
Saw Bob and DaveN back at home. Heard there were a few more flint incidents
  • GRITTY!!!!!!!
  • True Paris Roubaix stylie - cobbles, dirt, grime, 8 punctures, 1 blowout, 1 just caught in time blowout, 1 pick up by the wife, 1 call to the Wells support car! The hell of Hertfordshire - we took all the bad luck so hopefully you had a good ride Adam!
Oh and probably a record for the slowest ride!

  • Finished, in one piece, you will be pleased to know.
    No punctures, or mechanicals.
Might have had a closer look at the verge on one section than planned, but it was nice and soft.
    More to come later.
Oh forgot to mention, it was ******* hard.
    Bon soir
  • Well done Adam, looks like the law of Saturday ride conservation of punctures has come true - our loss was your gain.
