Eagle RR - Ugley 15th June
Four Ashwell riders took part on the Eagle RR on Father's day. Carmello, Richard Law, Matt Palmer, and Trahern. It's a 60 mile 3/4 race going up from Quendon, Newport, left to Clavering, left to Rickly green (I think) and then back to Quendon. Not a tremendously interesting race until a couple of l;aps from the end. A few breaks including Matt , but these were all brought back. With 1 &1/2 laps to go Richard & Carmello were free wheeling on the front, when suddenly Richard hit a huge pot hole and hit the kerb. This caused him to fly into the air, somersault and land on the verge on his back - the end of his race). After the race he was sore and lots of skin rash and admitted to being a little dazed. Bike was basically ok, club kit ruined - expect an order Geoff!!.
Back to the race and the last lap. The pace picked up and the race became very dangerous. Too much cycling on the wrong side of the road and too many risks being taken. 1 Eagle racer got away and his team mates protected him well. Mad rush out of Clavering towards the finish. A stepped hill providing the final run in along far too narrow a road. In the end very few people could wind things up and the road was blocked by riders in front. Carmello and Trahern finished one after another and Matt a few places behind having worked hard on a couple of breaks. Probably top 20 finish.
It all felt like a bit of a disappointing race at the end -oh well
