A route for the retired, holidaymakers, temporarily unemployed or downright shirkers

    Here's the route:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/10470182

Or for the non-PC amongst us:

Ashwell, Sutton, Potton, Abbotsley, Croxton, Hilton, Fenstanton, St Ives, The traffic free busway (just fabulous), Oakington, Dry Drayton, Bourn, Gransdens, Croydon, Wendy, Steeple, Ashwell.

Flat route, out into the expected breeze, blown back. Coffee break by the river in St Ives. Sunshine, a warm welcome and laughs guaranteed. No one left behind. All welcome, just bring a sense of humour. Inflatable crafts not required on this journey near the Ouse.

As I was going to St. Ives I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks, each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits: kits, cats, sacks and wives,
How many were going to St Ives?

  • All being well should be able to join you for this.
Weather looks absolutely fabulous for Friday.

    I prefer Roald Dahl's version :)
  • Will be good to see you again Jeremy.

Wind now expected to be from the SW, so harder coming back, but sunshine ALL the way!

    Meet outside 3 Tuns. 9am.
  • should be able to join as well
  • Look forward to seeing you Dom.

We can put you and Jeremy on the front and pull us along! :-)
  • Good warm up today with the Weds 9.30am ride.

Two bridges of sorts, 9 out, 35miles @ 17.8mph! Tasty.

    Thanks all for the ride.

    John
  • Weather still looking great for tomorrow, albeit now a SW wind on way back.

That will give us a chance to work off the coffee/tea and cake from the River Tea Rooms, St Ives!

Overlooking the river, this cafe features on club rides from Beds Road, Ely CC and the CTC.

    See you all tomorrow.
  • Looks a good day.
Wind picks up as morning goes on.
    Lots of sunshine.
    Tough day at the office.
  • Bring sun tan lotion and money for coffee break and 'rehydration' drinks in 3 Tuns post ride.

You sunburnt sicklemen, of August weary,
Come hither from the furrow and be merry:
Make holiday; your rye-straw hats put on
And these fresh nymphs encounter every one.

    The Flailing Bard
  • Rehydration later for myself
    Archery after, then recovery
Looking to combine both next year
    See you 09.00
    Coffee will be available
  • Kind offer of Cap'n's Cabin Coffee probably wiser option as out with the Flying Dutchwoman Friday evening.

    Should be a great day!
  • Great ride today thanks for organising John
  • Ears perked up at "combining the two" ... archery and cycling?

People do "Field Target" archery where you hike through the woods and loose arrows at plastic targets at unknown distances ... a mountain bike version done for time would be fun, like archery/bike biathlon! Sweet!
  • 7 out to St Ives on a fabulous sunny day.

Welcome coffee and cake at the River Tea Rooms in St Ives by the old bridge on the languid River Ouse.

Blast along the guided busway before heading into the headwind return.

It all went a big Pete Tong for me as The Man With The Hammer came a calling. Strong riding on the front by Nathan, Dom, Jeremy and new 3rd cat Jane - thanks folks for hauling me home!

Feeling a lot better now after a shower, quick nap, several pints of water (yes, really!) and mugs of tea.

Good to see you all again and thanks for your excellent company

    John
  • Great fun. Highlight 30 mph wind behind for a few miles
    Good crowd. Thanks

    Yes archery and cycling combo.
    Bit like skiing shooting
Riding to archery tonight, does that count ?
  • Ride again next Friday.
    Will post ride mid week
    60 miles
    Come along.

One of the best rides I've done in 2016 - really enjoyable.
Thanks to the Pirates for organising.
Hope to join you again soon.

ps. pleased to say it was business as usual as the Captain won the sprint back into Ashwell
  • Thanks All, especially to John for navigating us to a v nice café

Now dreaming about a spot of archery whilst riding a bike. Bit like shooting arrows from a galloping horse ... thing is, a horse can steer itself and stay upright. My bike's good, but probably not that good
  • I'm thinking more archery biathlon rather than shooting off the bike.

    Suggestion:

Old TT loop, shoot 6 arrows (off bike) x 3 loops, deducting your archery score at a rate of 1 minute per point, shooting a metric face at 50 metres.

    :awesome:
  • Your cycling is getting slower and my archery is getting better. Hmm
  • Are you glomming onto archery in hopes of beating me at something? :awesome:
  • Only on the sprints :-)
  • Yes, stand behind him for the entire archery session, then move in front and hit the gold with final arrow!
