Future risk to cyclist safety on roads around Sandon

Sandon Bury Farm, which is on the edge of Sandon as you leave the village heading towards Buntingford, has applied for planning permission to convert the farm into a wedding venue hosting up to 3 weddings per week with up to 200 or more guests. Clearly all of these guests have to get to and from the venue - if they come by car that is a very large number of cars using the lanes and if they come by coach that means large coaches driving down the narrow lanes. This traffic will be focused in the time leading up to the start of a wedding, leading to very busy spells, and if guests are late (there are usually a few) they may well be speeding. It will be the first time that most of these drivers will be using these lanes so they will not be familiar with the blind bends and pinch points, and like many drivers they may not give cyclists the space they require for safe passage. In addition there will be additional traffic from vehicles servicing the venue - deliveries, waste removal, cleaners, workers, etc.

If, like me, you believe this would be a significant risk to the many cyclists which use these lanes, you should lodge an objection with the North Herts Planning Dept. This can be done simply with an email to planning.control@north-herts.gov.uk marked for the attention of Melissa Tyler. Ideally it should also be copied to info@sandonactiongroup.com so that the Parish Council are also aware of your views when putting their recommendation to the County Council. The email need not be long or complex but should include your name and address and of course explaining that you regularly cycle on these lanes and the significant safety risk posed by these proposals. It would help to clearly state that you are objecting to the plans (for the avoidance of doubt!). Cut-off date for comments is 13th July but best to send a quick email now before you forget - it shouldn't take long to do.

If you want to look at the plans for more information just go on to the North Herts Planning Dept website and search for 17/01315/1.

Thanks, Jim

Those small lanes within that vicinity used to be my little training loop. They really aren't even suitable for cars let alone mass traffic
