That mapmyride route; it's a good, safe, low-fuss, scenic way in. It's vastly improved near London if you take the 2nd exit on the Forty Hill roundabout towards Enfield and go along the safer, wide street - pretty much straight line - London Road, Village Road, Green Lanes all the way to Finsbury Park/Islington. The A10 is just a bit too much like the Trench out of Star Wars.
I'm likely going in tomorrow [Weds] morning. Really steady pace - no thrills. Probably setting off 5.45am from Ashwell. Central London about 8.30am. Traffic builds up badly in the burbs if you leave much after 6am.
Might just get the train back - don't know yet.
If you plan to go alone - the tricky easy to miss bits are;
- after Bayford village - go right at the t-junction [it feels like you should go left].
- in Newgate Street village - go right at the roundabout [it feels like you should go straight on].
