MTB recommendations

Hello all,

Just thought I’d stick up a little post to quiz the off-road hive-mind of the club. I’m looking into getting a MTB to do a bit of riding on, nothing too fancy or expensive and wondered if anybody had any recommendations or bikes knocking around (in a medium) they’d be looking to sell/swap...

I was thinking of going for a Boardman pro 29er, seems like a great deal and has had lots of good reviews. Do people have any views on this?

All views welcome!

Huge thanks,

Will

  • Will, if you are going to ride locally then I would get a CX bike. There is very little off-road round here where you need a MTB. A CX bike would be much more fun as you can ride it faster making the trails more interesting. It also makes the tarmac linking sections easier. You could then swap tyres and use it for winter training.

A different matter if you are going MTB racing and the Pells should be able to make a recommendation.
  • What Mark said. Unless you are going to race an MTB or hit the serious trail centres get a CX.
  • There is a wide variety of riding in Herts from cross country plodding around local bridleways through to super technical trails in local woods. An MTB with a decent suspension fork will do a lot more than a CX bike once it gets knarly.

MC is dialled into the local MTB community and should be able to offer great advice here.
  • Interesting reading. Good thread Will. Up here it's a no brainer as there are Moor trails and sections impassable with anything less than a mtb. 29 is definitely the way to go I think. Jeremy is right in that there are some specialist mtb trails. Depends on what speed you want to ride as to whether you go mtb or cross and whether you intend to focus on the technical side of downhill in which case the pells are your goto people. Have fun.
  • In that case, an CX bike recommendations? I might actually buy one this time... thanks for helpful tips so far!
  • Or if anybody wants to trade/part ex one for a condor fratello in mint condition... or maybe a cervelo p2c tt bike (I have a new one, not giving that up quite yet).
